‘Safe Space’ Programming Catches Up With Coro

TVNZ 1 is pulling tomorrow afternoon’s catch-up broadcast of Coronation Street in the wake of the Christchurch mosque shootings.
The double-episode will screen Monday at 1pm but not tomorrow because the storyline clashes sharply with the two-minute silence the broadcaster will observe with the rest of the country at 1.32 (Extreme Cake Makers will screen instead).
According to the synopsis: “Chaos reigns following a gunshot at Number 11. Phelan heads to the Bistro and takes a hostage.”
It’s an indisputable call but other programming changes verge on being as absurd as Maori TV apologising for a harmless gun scene in Piri’s Tiki Tour — despite receiving not one complaint.
Duke is replacing Saturday’s previously scheduled movie Non-Stop with Groundhog Day and Sunday night’s NZ Hunter Adventures with Stand Up: Sean Locke Live.
Hunter Adventures also is being pulled from TVNZ 1’s schedule on March 24 and 31 (Location, Location, Location is the replacement).
And the network will drop a re-run of Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders on March 29, replacing episode three of season one, which concerned a gas attack on an Egyptian-American, with the less-sensitive episode four.
Three, meanwhile, is replacing Saturday’s network movie premiere of Split and repeat of The Silence of the Lambs with re-runs of Eddie the Eagle and Almost Famous.
There is some relief from this ‘safe space’ programming hysteria: on Sunday, Country Calendar and Sunday will swap slots, with the latter interviewing Kiwi Muslims about their hopes and their leaders about the rise of Islamophobia prior to the Christchurch terror attack.

I’ve been hit pretty hard emotionally by these attacks (nowhere near as close as the Muslim community I must add), growing up in Christchurch and being schooled nearby. But this is verging on the ridiculous. Some explicit things, like the Coro episode, would still not be right but the blanket changes to other shows, a lot of them innocuous, is not healthy for anyone. Adding to that, the availability of Netflix and similar now means people can access those shows if they want, anyway.
Agreed. This is verging on the hysteria that hit the us post-911 when images of the Twin Towers were being excised willy-nilly.
21st century stick your head in the sand mentality.
