Death Darkens Dexter’s Doorstep

The next season of Dexter, which SoHo will debut in July, will be the last.

It goes to air June 30 in the US, several months earlier than normal, and will be preceded by season seven’s release on Blu-ray.

But whereas fans probably will see season eight within days of the US, there will be a month-long gap between the US and NZ Blu-ray releases (May 14 there, mid-June here).

However, that’s still a massive improvement on previous seasons, many of which were DVD-only here for years, even though some were for sale on Blu-ray across the Tasman.

Showtime is bringing Dexter forward from its traditional US fall run to help promote the launch of its latest crime drama, Ray Donovan, which SoHo also is expected to premiere in July.

Although Showtime has been coy about Dexter’s future, Deadline reports “the end game of Dexter was mapped out two years ago when Showtime closed a two-year deal with series star Michael C Hall after difficult negotiations and gave the drama a two-season renewal to wrap its story”.

Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter has an interview with former Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips about his plans for the next season of Showtime’s Nurse Jackie, which went to air this week in the US.

Paradoxically, Phillips wants to “make it funny again and more authentic” — which doesn’t sound promising as Jackie’s best when it’s black.

As Variety observed of the season premiere: “Jackie remains watchable thanks primarily to [star Edie] Falco, although the best moments are almost invariably dramatic, not humourous.”

But Entertainment Weekly argues, “Emotionally, the show’s been downward-spiraling for so long, it needs a break from all the bleakness” while TV Guide reckons “recovery won’t be easy, but so far it’s an enjoyably bumpy ride”.

Given the last season tanked in the ratings for TV3, dont expect to see Jackie back on duty here in a hurry.

New to the cast in season five is Morris Chestnut (American Horror StoryV) as one of two new docs while returning is Bobby Cannavale (whose turn as Mike Cruz last season went to air here the same time as his chilling portrayal of a sadistic gangster in Boardwalk Empire).

Also making a comeback is Dexter’s Yvonne Strahovski as his deadly nightshade girlfriend.
