Despicable Me 2 Box Office Makes Original #1 on Disc
Having trampled The Lone Ranger last week at the box office, Despicable Me 2 this weekend set its minions on Pacific Rim.
For the second weekend in a row, the animated sequel was the #1 movie at the NZ box office.
It added $724,892 to its first week gross to tally nearly $2.5 million.
Moreover, in its second week takings slipped only a third whereas The Lone Ranger’s were down 54.4% (it grossed $224,849 to rank sixth over the weekend).
Despicable Me 2’s popularity in the US, where it also out-grossed Pacific Rim, has led to disc sales of the original rocketing up the sales chart to be #1 again.
Reports Home Media Magazine: “It’s common for disc sales of a certain film to get a lift when the sequel hits theatres, but it’s extremely rare for the disc to shoot straight to the top of the national sales charts.”
Meanwhile, the Blu-ray of Pacific Rim will include half-an-hour of deleted scenes, featuring mostly “character stuff”, when it’s released probably 3-4 months from now.
The weekend’s highest-grossing movies at the NZ box office were:
1. Despicable Me 2: $724,892
2. Pacific Rim: $614,991
3. The Heat: $370,222
4. Monsters University: $357,092
5. Man of Steel: $255,820.

If you can’t wait for Pacific Rim, there’s a film called Atlantic Rim making the rounds now … And the Blu-ray of Despicable Me was spotted for only $10 at The Warehouse.
Atlantic Rim had a name change to From the Sea after the lawyers for Pacific Rim got involved.
Ah yes, posters I’ve seen still carry the original title. Those who have had the misfortune to see it say it is true bottom of the barrel stuff.
