Dim 4K Start for Disney+ Star
Disney+ subscribers who hope next week’s launch of Star will unlock a treasure trove of movies and TV series in 4K will be less than starstruck.
Only a handful of key titles will be available to stream in 4K when the service goes live on February 23.
Curiously, some of the classic movies that Star will offer in HD can be streamed in 4K on rival service Apple TV.
These include Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid and Braveheart (the latter also can be bought on 4K-UHD Blu-ray but disappointingly Disney, which now owns the Fox library, didn’t upgrade the former for a similar release last year to mark its 50th anniversary).
Here are the movies that Star will stream in 4K at launch:
- Alien
- Alien: Covenant
- Die Hard
- Die Hard 2
- Die Hard With A Vengeance
- A Good Day To Die Hard
- Live Free or Die Hard
- Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
- Rise of the Planet of the Apes
- War for the Planet of the Apes
- Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
The good news is Star also will kick off with two TV series in 4K: Big Sky and Love, Victor.
Previously, they would have wound up in HD on the TVNZ or Sky streaming platforms.

Hi Philip, I just wondered if there is any mention of extras 🙂
Not that I know of, Trevor, but will check it out …
When it comes to streaming services you only get the film or TV show. There’s no extra content that comes when buying a disc version. All those extras are generally not included on streaming platforms.
That’s generally true, Chris, but some Apple TV and Disney+ movies do stream with extras.
Yes, especially the Marvel movies on Disney+. Some of them even include audio commentaries 🙂
