Disney+ Adds Nightbitch to January Slate

Nightbitch will stream exclusively on Disney+ from January 24.

The Seachlight Pictures movie has earned Amy Adams a Golden Globe nomination: for Best Actress in a Leading Role – Musical or Comedy.

She plays a career woman who hits pause to be a stay-at-home mom — but soon her new domesticity takes a surreal turn.

It was directed by Marielle Heller and co-stars Scoot McNairy and, in their movie debuts, twins Arleigh and Emmett Snowden.

“As far as adaptations go, Nightbitch packs more bark than bite as the stellar Amy Adams takes on motherhood and the neighbourhood in a rather conventional romp,” was the Rotten Tomatoes consensus.

In other streaming news, Netflix has announced the latest Russo Brothers epic, The Electric Slate, will stream from March 14.

Based on the graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag, it’s billed as “a spectacular adventure from the directors of Avengers: Endgame set in an alternate, retro-futuristic version of the 1990s”. Reads the blurb:

Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things, Enola Holmes, Damsel) stars as Michelle, an orphaned teenager navigating life in a society where sentient robots resembling cartoons and mascots, who once served peacefully among humans, now live in exile following a failed uprising. Everything Michelle thinks she knows about the world is upended one night when she’s visited by Cosmo, a sweet, mysterious robot who appears to be controlled by Christopher — Michelle’s genius younger brother whom she thought was dead.

Determined to find the beloved sibling she thought she had lost, Michelle sets out across the American southwest with Cosmo, and soon finds herself reluctantly joining forces with Keats (Chris Pratt, Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World), a low-rent smuggler, and his wisecracking robot sidekick, Herman (voiced by Anthony Mackie). As they venture into the Exclusion Zone, a walled-off corner in the desert where robots now exist on their own, Keats and Michelle find a strange, colorful group of new animatronic allies — and begin to learn that the forces behind Christopher’s disappearance are more sinister than they ever expected.

Apple TV+ has renewed Bad Monkey for a second season and announced Original Film The Gorge will stream from February 14. Reads the blurb:

Two highly-trained operatives (Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy) are appointed to posts in guard towers on opposite sides of a vast and highly classified gorge, protecting the world from an undisclosed, mysterious evil that lurks within. They bond from a distance while trying to stay vigilant in defending against an unseen enemy. When the cataclysmic threat to humanity is revealed to them, they must work together in a test of both their physical and mental strength to keep the secret in the gorge before it’s too late.

Sigourney Weaver co-stars; you can view the trailer for Scott (The Black Phone) Derrickson’s movie here.

  1. Is there any chance Shifting Gears will show up in NZ? — Fsmith.

  2. I would expect it to land on Disney+ in February. It premieres next month on Hulu and there’s usually a few weeks’ lag between Hulu and D+ series debuts.
