Also Disney are adding IMAX to 13 Marvel movies from November 12th including Shang-Chi ?
Thanks, Trevor. According to Deadline, “The default for the films on Disney+ will be Imax’s expanded aspect ratio, which is 1:90:1. Regular widescreen versions of the films will also continue to be available. Because of the evolution of technology, some early titles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, were shot only partially in Imax. Later, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were the first titles to be filmed entirely with Imax cameras.”
I have never seen an IMAX movie before so I’m quite looking forward to seeing what it looks like. I wish I had a bigger screen though as it’s only 51 inches. I wonder if we will ever have IMAX TV’s ?
No Imax TVs, that would mean a regression in the last 20 years of TV production back to the analogue days of square screens :D. If you want a taste of Imax try Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
The closest thing would be Imax enhanced. I was interested in this myself but I have since lost interest as it’s got poor support from both device manufacturers and content creators. There’s a lack of support on TVs, AV receivers, speakers, and UHD Blu-ray discs.
Further investigation shows that this new Imax Enhanced is nothing more than another sop to those who must fill their screen with picture. The old Super 35 film format allowed for varying aspect ratios depending on how the film was to be seen – theatre, TV, home video – by a combination of opening up the matte and selective pan and scanning. Not favoured by film fans who want to see a film in original aspect ratio. Tellingly most Marvel films were shot flat, allowing easy manipulation of the image.
PS I wonder why Disney/Imax Enhanced didn’t go the full hog like Warners with their Imax Blu-ray/4K releases. On a Warners disc Imax scenes fill the entire TV screen whereas Disney+ Imax retains vestigial black bars during Imax scenes.
I wonder if they will introduce Imax-enhanced for other films that’s also formatted for 1.90 like Beauty and the Beast and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. It makes a significant difference in the immersion.
