Disney+ Giveth and Taketh Away

The best reviewed of the epic fantasy sagas to hit streaming services last year won’t be returning for a second season.

Deadline today reported Disney+ has axed Willow:

Willow, which picked up years after the events of the film, did not have the zeitgeist cultural impact of the original but was well received by critics, getting a 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. While the series won’t continue, Willow remains an important IP in the Lucasfilm library, so it might be revisited in the future.

In other Disney+ news, the streamer has announced it will premiere the “genre-hoping action-comedy” American Born Chinese on May 24.

Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang, it’s named after Jin Wang, an average teenager who is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.

The coming-of-age adventure stars Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once).

Disney+ also will premiere a live-action re-imagining of Peter Pan on April 28. Reads the blurb:

Peter Pan & Wendy introduces Wendy Darling, a young girl afraid to leave her childhood home behind, who meets Peter Pan, a boy who refuses to grow up. Alongside her brothers and a tiny fairy, Tinker Bell, she travels with Peter to the magical world of Neverland. There, she encounters an evil pirate captain, Captain Hook, and embarks on a thrilling and dangerous adventure that will change her life forever.

Jude Law, Alexander Moloney and Ever Anderson star.

New from April 12 on Disney+ will be Renner-vations!, a four-part series that showcases Jeremy Renner’s love of renovating cars. Reads the blurb:

Renner and his team of expert builders use their skills to reimagine decommissioned vehicles and rebuild them into mind-blowing creations that serve communities around the world.

Guests Vanessa Hudgens, Anil Kapoor, Anthony Mackie and Sebastián Yatra will join the Hawkeye star.

Finally, Australian Original series Matildas: The World at Our Feet will kick off on April 26.

It’s billed as “an inspirational and intimate behind-the-scenes story” of the Australia’s women’s national football team as they strive to become the best in the world’s most popular sport.
