Disney+ Sweetens July With Candy

Disney+ has added true-crime thriller Candy to its July slate.

Starring Jennifer Biel and Melanie Lynskey, it will stream from July 27.

The five-part thriller streamed on Hulu in May and its global distribution was unknown because of the tie up between UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, and 20th Television, which is a Disney unit.

Disney+ at this stage is streaming it here and in Australia under the Star banner.

Biel plays Candy Montgomery, an ’80s suburban housewife suspected of murdering her best friend and ex-lover’s wife (Lynskey).

The Hollywood Reporter thought it “an unsatisfying telling of a compelling story” while Variety said it “starts strong … [but] stumbles right when it really counts”.

Nonetheless, it scored a 70% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which concluded: “Candy‘s sour aftertaste is counterbalanced by uniformly terrific performances, but it only takes a couple licks before this true crime drama loses its flavour.”
