D’oh! The Simpsons to End Early

TV2 looks set to overhaul Sunday nights by cutting short The Simpsons’ run.

The July 3 broadcast is billed as the season finale, even though two episodes from the 27th season have yet to air.

Fland Canyon is episode 19, leaving To Courier With Love and Orange is the New Mellow outstanding (episode 21, Simprovised, was fast-tracked last month).

TV2’s ratings have taken a hit since TV3 launched season two of Westside on the back of The Block NZ: Girls vs Boys.

Westside’s premiere won its timeslot in the 25-54 demographic, delivering a 9.8 rating and an average audience of 190,900 people — which was 21,600 more viewers than last season.

According to MediaWorks, “Westside grew the Sunday timeslot with 25-54 ratings up by +60%, and a +39% share lift in 25-54 compared to the previous four-week average.”

Lead-in The Block also is rating “significantly higher” on Sunday nights than it was last year, winning with viewers 18-39, 18-49 and 25-54.

The double-act helped TV3 to win the night in its target demo, 25-54, as well as the 18-49 race and with household shoppers with kids.

It was a similar story this weekend, with both shows contributing to TV3 again winning Sunday night in three of the key demos: 25-54, 18-39 and 18-49.

It’s not clear yet how TV2 will respond, although movies that overlap Westside for the duration of its run seems the most likely strategy, while TV One has confirmed it will launch blockbuster miniseries Roots on July 3.
