Due on Blu: Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection

A Blu-ray box set of 15 Alfred Hitchcock movies, complete with 15 hours of bonus content, will be released on October 3.

NZ pricing has still to be confirmed but expect to pay around $150-$170 given at least one Australian retailer has listed it for $A130.

Only two of the movies, North by Northwest (1959) and Psycho (1960), have been released here on Blu-ray.

And only last week a third, Vertigo (1958), hit the headlines for edging out Citizen Kane on Sight & Sound’s “poll shocker” of the 50 greatest movies ever made (Tui, anyone?).

Moreover, how a “masterpiece collection” can be described as such when it’s missing Strangers on a Train (1951) but includes Frenzy (1972) and Family Plot (1976) is as debatable as Sight & Sound’s choices.

It’s not clear if the Australasian release will include a 50-page book filled with “storyboards, costume sketches, correspondence, photographs, and much more” given it’s selling for well below the listed US price of $US300 — and invariably local releases of classics come without the US trimmings (note Universal’s realtively vanilla versions of 100th anniversary milestones like To Kill a Mockingbird and All Quiet on the Western Front).

I am really only interested in purchasing The Birds and Vertigo. Hopefully individual releases of these movies will follow not long after the box set is released.

  2. The really good thing about this release is that the widescreen films should finally all be in widescreen. The only R4 DVDs of The Birds, Marnie, Torn Curtain, and Topaz were pan-and-scan; while those titles are hardly top-tier Hitchcock (Topaz in particular is the only Hitchcock I’ve turned off), it will be good to actually watch those films as they were supposed to be seen.

  3. If anyone is still interested in buying the Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection it’s on sale for $75 at Mighty Ape … I have ordered mine 🙂
