Good News for ThreeNews

Warner Bros. Discovery reports a “strong debut” for its new-look, outsourced nightly news bulletin on Three.

Here’s the media release:

Monday, 8 July 2024 – Overnight ratings released by Nielsen* have confirmed the first weekend of ThreeNews has had a strong debut.

Produced by Stuff Group for Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), ThreeNews screens nightly on Three at 6pm and is also available live and on demand on ThreeNow.

On Saturday, the first edition of ThreeNews received a 19.3% share in the AP 25-54 target demographic.

This was up from the average 15.7% share the Saturday night bulletin received over the past quarter, and up from the 17.3% share the bulletin received on the same Saturday last year.

In the AP 5+ demographic, the bulletin reached almost 340,000 people, up 89% from the week prior and 32% from the same bulletin last year.**

On ThreeNow, live streams of the Saturday 6pm bulletin were up 19% on the previous four-week average.***

Sunday’s edition was similarly strong, reaching 300,000 people in the AP 5+ demographic and achieving an 18.6% share, up from 17.6% for the same time last year.

In total, the weekend’s bulletins reached a combined total of 500,000 people.

WBD VP Head of Networks ANZ Juliet Peterson says, “ThreeNews had some strong competition for its debut on Saturday, with both the Warriors and the All Blacks playing.

“We know that big sporting events always draw big viewing numbers, and so with that context, this is an even more impressive result.

“As well as the quantitative proof in the numbers, this was also a great result from a qualitative perspective.

“This weekend’s bulletins were really strong and are testament to the huge amount of work put in across the Stuff and WBD teams over the past few months.

“These were only bulletins one and two, and we expect ThreeNews will get better and better.”

ThreeNews’ weekend bulletins are anchored by Laura Tupou and are 30 minutes long.

Tonight’s edition will be the first of the 60-minute weekday version fronted by Samantha Hayes.

  1. I watched the first two programmes at the weekend. Pity the weekdays aren’t a 30-minute programme as 60 minutes has too much fluff and dross to pad out the hour. Most overseas networks only have a 30-minute evening news with a local programme with weather and sport later. Time will tell if Stuff will be successful or will the cost of doing it be too much for them (as WBD discovered).

  2. I did, too, Paul W, and was impressed with both. Concise and well-packaged with a couple of decent scoops. Agree 100% about the optimal duration.
