HD Heads-Up: April 26

➢ Prime gets back into top gear when the return of the motoring show of the same name will help to launch a new line-up. The third season will screen 8.30 Mondays from May 7 and opens with a motorsports road trip across America’s Wild West in the new McLaren, Jaguar and Ford. Will it be third time’s a charm for the three amigos of Matt LeBlanc, Chris Harris and Rory Reid? “On the evidence of the first episode of the new series, yes – up to a point,” Radio Times said. “While there is a greater attempt at broadening the appeal and injecting humour, the ‘banter’ does still a feel a little too forced. But it’s not to say there aren’t some good things to say about our first taste of the new run” …

➢ Prime has delayed Top Gear’s return until two months after its UK broadcast to help promote two other newcomers: Russia With Simon Reeve (7.30 Sundays from May 6) and the season two premiere of Forensics NZ (8.30 Sundays from May 6). Both will overlap TVNZ 1’s Coast NZ in a face-off for discriminating viewers opting for solid factual content over movies and reality competitions …

➢ The Telegraph recommended RWSR for its “stunning aerial photography” but otherwise thought the 100th anniversary Russian Revolution travelogue “felt more like a Cold War spy thriller. The camera crew were tailed by Federal Security Service (FSB) officers in unmarked cars. They were subjected to interrogations, drug tests and detained in police stations for no reason. Welcome to Putin’s police state” …

➢ New to Three that week are Inside Crime (9.30 Monday), a suspiciously tabloid-sounding Australian series that pairs journalist Leila McKinnon (A Current Affair) with criminologist Garner Clancey, and season three of Funny Girls (9.45 Friday) while Duke will premiere Car SOS (7.00 Sunday), a US series about restoring classic cars, and new episodes of Taskmaster (8.30 Thursday). Ending their runs are Rich House, Poor House, The Loggers and Fish of the Day

A May 10 Mrs Brown’s Boys Special (TVNZ 1, 8.30) will be good news for Coronation Street fans, as it means the soap will start earlier, at 9.05, and run for an extra half-hour …

Amy Schumer, Stephen Mangan and singer Jess Glynne will guest on the May 11 broadcast of The Graham Norton Show (Three, 8.00) while guesting this week and next on Prime’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert are: Lucy Liu, Henry Winkler and Run The Jewels (10.30 Thursday); Rachel Weisz, Ann Dowd and H. Jon Benjamin (10.30 Friday); and Mandy Patinkin and stand-up comic Heather Pasternak (11.15 Monday) …

➢ The network movie premiere of Independence Day: Resurgence will screen on May 6 (Three, 8.35). Other HD coming attractions that week will include:

  • The Little Mermaid (TVNZ 2, 5.30 Saturday)
  • Kung Fu Panda 2 (TVNZ 2, 7.00 Saturday)
  • Meet the Parents (TVNZ 2, 8.45 Saturday)
  • The New Republic (Three, 10.30 Saturday)
  • Duplex (TVNZ 2.10.55 Saturday)
  • Captain America: The First Avenger (TVNZ 2, 8.30 Sunday)
  • The Great Maiden’s Blush (Maori TV, 8.30 Sunday)
  • Scream (TVNZ 2, 11.45 Sunday)
  • 2 Guns (Duke, 9.00 Monday)
  • Payback (Prime, 9.30 Monday)
  • Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (Three, 7.30 Wednesday)
  • Robin Hood (Three, 8.30 Thursday)
  • Special Ops (Duke, 8.30 Friday).

Good to see that Prime have finally decided to show season 25 of Top Gear. This season was a big step up over the last couple and was really enjoyable. Pity Prime is only SD on Freeview.
