HD Heads-Up: August 24-30

TV3 will strip season two of The Block NZ from 7.30 Monday-Wednesday starting August 26.

The first season aired on Wednesdays and Thursdays but this year TV3 is front-loading the week so it can keep Thursdays and Fridays free for the return of The X Factor USA on September 12.

In the meantime, it will plug the 7.30 Friday slot with movies, starting with the HD network premiere of Mr Popper’s Penguins, while The Graham Norton Show takes a break.

Surprisingly, in spite of its undeservedly low Sunday night ratings, TV3 is promoting the SD UK panel show Would I Lie to You? to 9.30-ish Fridays.

TV2 also is refreshing its Friday line-up post-The Voice Australia with a new two-hour sitcom block comprising HD re-runs of The Middle’s second season, SD re-runs of $#*! My Dad Says and The Big Bang Theory’s third season, and the HD premiere of Happy Endings’ third and final season.

But the best news for comedy fans is TV3’s decision to re-run Raising Hope in HD 3.30 Saturday afternoons from episode 18 of season one.

The show originally aired in HD on TV3 but was switched to Four, which broadcasts it in SD.

And there’s even better news for followers of The Walking Dead: TV2 will air season three re-runs in double-episodes from 11.00 Sunday ahead of the fourth season’s premiere, which hopefully will be only a few days behind the US (where it resumes on October 13).

Those of you who haven’t overdosed on slick medical dramas will be thrilled to learn TV2 is adding a third HD hospital soap to Monday nights called Monday Mornings.

It will follow Private Practice at 10.30 but not for long: the David E Kelley newcomer was axed after 10 episodes in the US.

Reviews ranged from the effusive to the derisive.

Monday Mornings is Kelleyesque in all the best and admittedly worst — melodramatic, manipulative, shocking — ways,” acknowledged Newsday.

“But it’s also intelligent, particularly well-written and acted, and above all interested in matters other than what’s directly mounted on the screen before your eyes, most notably ethics, human nature and human fallibility.”

Not so, countered the Boston Herald: “Kelley is known for creating wonderfully memorable, sometimes deliriously neurotic characters.

“Judging from the writing here, it’s as if he’s been medicated into a stupor. Diagnosis: Waste of time.”

Also of note in HD for the week starting August 24 are:

❑ The season finales of First Crossings (TV One, 8.30 Tuesday) and Are You There, Chelsea? (TV2, 11.30 Wednesday)

❑ Re-runs of season one of Enlightened (TV One, 11.30 Friday) and five of Chuck (TV2, 4.05am Saturday)

❑ The movies Apron Strings (TV One, 12.20am Sunday), G-Force (TV2, 7.30 Saturday), Yogi Bear (TV2, 7.00 Sunday), Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (TV2, 8.35 Sunday), Shutter (TV3, 11.45 Sunday) and Predators (TV3, 8.35 Monday).

YAY … Raising Hope in HD, don’t think I have ever seen it in HD 🙂

  2. Hey, Phil. With The Walking Dead returning around october 13th, I hear it performed well at the 10.30 last year, that it will return to the 9.30 it originally had. Reading TVNZ’s ratecard, I believe it’s true. Is it?

  3. Hard to say, Richard. Those ratecards are notoriously unreliable. On the other hand, season three was a big improvement on season two quality-wise, and its US ratings were excellent. So having invested heavily in a series that initially underperformed, but which it still feels is important enough to re-run and broadcast new seasons of within days of the US, TV2 may feel the time is right to relaunch it in primetime. We can only hope …

  4. Also Winners and Losers is being pushed back to 9.35 Thursdays to make way for UK comedy Vicious! Let’s hope Winners’ ratings improve!
