HD Heads-Up: December 7-13

TV One will screen in HD a British documentary about Her Majesty’s prisoners serving life sentences.

Lifers (9.45 Tuesday) was filmed over six months at Gartree Prison in Leicestershire, where the inmates describe their crimes and how they feel about spending the rest of their lives in prison.

“Essentially, this documentary is an effective, in-depth study into the moral capacity of ‘lifers’ and whether they are truly evil, or just mere victims of circumstance,” Channel Hopping said.

“Over the course of an hour, the heart of the programme is revealed to be an examination of the psychological impacts of killing — how a prisoner deals with their crime with varying degrees of remorse and additionally, how each one comes to terms with the fact that they could spend the rest of their lives incarcerated.”

“When Kieron talks about battering a man to death, he is so matter of fact about what happened that it is as chilling as the killing itself,” The Daily Mirror reported.

The Telegraph said Lifers “invited little do-gooding sympathy, but no condemnation either” while The Huffington Post called it an “absorbing chronicle of life behind prison bars for those convicted of heinous crimes”.

Metro said The Channel 4 documentary “took a pragmatic look at men serving life sentences for murder – many of whom appeared chillingly normal”.

Meanwhile, TV2’s Christmas programming includes a repeat marathon of festive episodes of its Wednesday comedies: The Big Bang Theory (8.30), Two and a Half Men (9.00), 2 Broke Girls (9.30) and Mike & Molly (10.00).

They will be preceded by Shortland Street’s hour-long Christmas cliffhanger (and the first episode to air in 5.1) at 7.00 and the season finale of Mike & Molly at 8.00.

Other season finales include New Zealand’s Got Talent (TV One, 7.30 Sunday), Scandal (TV One, 9.30 Wednesday), Inside Men (TV One, 10.55 Wednesday) and Anh Does Vietnam (TV One, 8.30 Thursday).

Good to see Five-O series back-to-back.

  2. Enjoyable show and glad that Series 3 is screening straight after Series 2 finished. We are still a long way behind many other countries though.
