HD Heads-Up: February 23-March 1

Africa will end its spectacular run on February 26 (TV One, 8.30) with the behind-the-scenes special, Eye to Eye.

Bizarrely, it sounds like a compilation of the behind-the-scenes segments that have ended each episode to date, which would seem a weird programming strategy.

TVNZ has still to clarify content* but you can expect to learn more about how this magnificent series was filmed when the Blu-ray is released on March 7.

It will include more than 70 minutes of exclusive interviews, exclusive unseen footage from the Harenna Forest in Ethiopia, the making-of shorts, outtakes and deleted scenes.

Also of note in HD for the week starting February 23:

❑ The season finale of Wild Colombia on Wednesday (TV3, 8.30)

❑ The network premiere of Paul on Sunday (TV3, 8.30)

❑ Another chance to see the first two episodes of House Husbands on Saturday (TV One, 8.30)

❑ Re-runs of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button on Saturday (TV2, 8.30) and, on Sunday, National Treasure (TV2, 8.30) and No Country for Old Men (TV3, 11.45)

❑ Danny DeVito literally phones in another guest turn as Homer’s bother Herb in Sunday’s The Simpsons (TV3, 7.30) and Jane Lynch guests on the 7.00 re-run

❑ Mark Wahlbergh, Michael Fassbender and Sarah Silverman guest on Friday’s Graham Norton Show (TV3, 8.30).

* Since posting this, TVNZ has advised the special will be a mix of new content and extended behind-the-scenes footage of the type that ends each episode.

It’s GRRRRRRRRR having Vegas on Prime…sounds like a good show 🙂

  2. Africa has been a superb watch, especially enlightening are the little behind the scenes pieces following each episode. This will be a rare must-buy when it gets a Blu-ray release.

  3. Why is the last episode called Eye to Eye for NZ when overseas the last ep was called The Future?

  4. I have no idea why TV One opted to insert the behind-the-scenes special, Eye to Eye, before the last episode. I presumed Eye to Eye would end the run but The Future will screen next week.

  5. A return to the good ol’ days when TVNZ would play episodes in random order.

  6. More strangeness … at the end of Eye to Eye, Attenborough gives a short promo to the Future episode. Was Eye to Eye a special for the colonies? It’s not listed on the official BBC site for Africa.

Wonder if it has anything to do with the last episode being re-edited to remove a comment about climate change? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-21413509

  7. Interesting conjecture, thx1138. But TVNZ says it chose to run Eye to Eye as the penultimate ep when the BBC offered it the special. While the Future ep has since been re-edited, TVNZ understands it has the version the BBC originally aired.
