HD Heads-Up: January 19

TVNZ 1 will premiere the fourth and possibly final series of Sherlock on January 29 — two weeks after the finale aired on BBC1 (to a record-low number of viewers). Why the network has waited so long to screen what may be the ultimate season is as big a mystery as anything Holmes and Watson investigated. Granted, Sherlock has only ever been an elementary performer here but the worldwide interest in the show’s outcome should have been reason enough for TVNZ 1 to screen it at least same week as the UK (or stream it OnDemand) …

Speaking of streaming, TVNZ OnDemand will stream express from the US Training Day and Powerless (both from February 3). The former reimagines the movie of the same name and the latter is a DC Universe comedy about office workers without super powers! Also streaming from the same day will be season four of The 100 (TVNZ 2 resumes season three on Saturday afternoons from January 28) …

TVNZ 1 will use the week starting January 28 to premiere Vet Tales (7.30 Wednesdays), a series about two Rotorua vets, and resume Women in Blue (8.00 Wednesdays), George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces (7.30 Thursdays) and Kirstie and Phil’s Love It or List It (7.30 Fridays). But another newcomer, Sue Perkins’ comedy panel show Insert Name Here (10.05 Thursdays), will air in SD …

The same week TV3 will launch Celebrity Family Feud (5.25 weekdays) and resume new episodes of The Graham Norton Show (8.30 Friday), starting with guests Nicole Kidman, Dev Patel, Felicity Jones, Dawn French, Sir Michael Parkinson and Jack Savoretti …

Network movie premieres abound for for the week starting January 28: Home (TV3, 7.00 Saturday), Jupiter Ascending (TVNZ 2, 9.00 Saturday), St Vincent (TVNZ 1, 10.35 Saturday), Big Hero 6 (TVNZ 2, 6.30 Sunday), Exodus: Gods and Kings (TV3, 8.20 Sunday), Blended (TVNZ 2, 8.30 Sunday) and The Rolling Stones: Ole Ole Ole! A Trip Across Latin America (Prime, 8.35 Tuesday)

Said The Hollywood Reporter of Ole Ole Ole: “To everyone who might have thought they’d seen enough Rolling Stones concert documentaries for one lifetime, the greatest old geezer rock ‘n’ roll band in the world proves otherwise in Ole! Ole! Ole!: A Trip Across Latin America. The occasion of the group’s early 2016 tour of Latin America, culminating in its unprecedented concert in Havana, Cuba, on the heels of President Obama’s trip there, provides an exhilarating fresh context that proves stimulating both to the musicians and the viewer” …

Other HD coming attractions that week include: The Vow (TV3, 8.05 Monday), I, Robot (Prime, 8.35 Monday), Rise of the Planet of the Apes (TV3, 8.10 Tuesday), 27 Dresses (TV3, 8.05 Wednesday), The Dukes of Hazard (TVNZ 2, 8.30 Wednesday), Reign of Fire   (TVNZ 2 8.30 Thursday)Fast Five (TV3, 8.30 Thursday) and Jack The Giant Slayer (TVNZ 2, 7.30 Friday)

Off topic, Philip are you able to let us know if the recently announced Prime Plus 1 channel will be available on the Freeview HD platform?

  2. No, it won’t be, Leo. It will be only on Sky and the Freeview satellite service.

  3. Thanks for clearing that up, Philip. Disappointed Sky are still stuck in their ancient ways of restricting access for Prime Plus 1 and Prime HD for Freeview|HD. Doesn’t Sky realise they are affecting Prime’s reach and potential by restricting access? The sooner this monopoly dies the better.

  4. I liked season 4 of Sherlock (now out on BD in the uk). If it really is the final series then it went out on a high note.
