The latter is a “gripping” Channel 5 mystery about an affair between a married art teacher (Kara Tointon) and another teacher that spirals out of control when a student disappears on a school trip, sparking a murder investigation. “The story plays out as a whodunit over four episodes,” The Telegraph said. “I’ve watched the lot and the ending isn’t bad – I didn’t guess the identity of the villain – but the quality of the drama is pretty schlocky” …

➢➢ Sight Unseen is a Canadian detective drama about an ex-homicide cop who’s diagnosed as being clinically blind and uses an “assistance app” to connect with a professional seeing-eye guide — with a dark past — 5000 km away to help solve crimes. The Wall Street Journal thought it “a conceptually adventurous way of getting into all manner of thorny moral issues and strategic dilemmas, as well as putting its hero in precarious situations” …

  1. I see that right wing “news” network Newsmax will launch an Australian offshoot which doesn’t bode well for factual news reporting. Will this offshoot have an effect on NZ’s dire news market Philip or is it business as usual? I have my concerns if it ever crossed the Tasman into this market. — Leo.

  2. Thanks for the heads-up, Leo. I doubt if the Newsmax offshoot will make it here. But never fear a plurality of news options. Much of what passes for modern-day journalism these days I would have been sacked for as a young reporter in the early 1980s. So I am very sceptical of reportage regardless of its liberal or conservative bias. Objectivity seems to be a lost cause. What I do appreciate about modern media is the range of outlets that allow consumers to make their own informed decisions about which sources to trust. The risk of this is we narrowcast and settle for a news echo chamber rather than sample the breadth of news platforms. But on the whole it’s better than the gatekeepers that used to rule.

  3. Fair points Philip and yes objectivity isn’t really a key pillar for journalism today. Choice is great but they all need to be factual and objective. Happy New Year Philip, looking forward to a cracker year of analysis of all things screenwise. — Leo.

  4. I’d happily check out an Aussie version of Newsmax if it did run here (a NZ variant would never happen though). I’d also quite like to see the GB News channel offered here, although a decent amount of its content is already available to view via the web. — Dave.

  5. Yes, Dave, there’s a great range of news options online, invariably in higher resolution than the SD cable news feeds on Sky. 24/7 coverage of the LA fires was extraordinary on YouTube and led mainstream media by at least a day.
