HD Heads-Up: January 27

TV3 is firing The New Celebrity Apprentice. After abysmal ratings for last night’s episode, it is replacing tonight’s broadcast with a re-run of Raiders of the Lost Ark, which also will pre-empt The Graham Norton Show. The rest of Apprentice will play out 3.55pm Saturdays while replacing it on Friday nights will be more Indiana Jones movies. Taking over Apprentice’s Thursday slot will be re-runs of Road Madness and Territory Cops. No word on when Norton, one of TV3’s most popular shows, will resurface …

Last night’s Apprentice averaged only 1.0% of TV3’s target audience, 25-54 year-olds, which led to lead-out Fast & Furious averaging only 1.6%. TVNZ 2’s Booze Patrol averaged 4.7% opposite Apprentice and TVNZ 1’s MasterChef Australia, 4.6%. Last week, Thursday’s Apprentice averaged 1.5% and Friday’s 2.0%  …

There’s more good news for those seeking relief from TV3’s reality TV overkill: The February 9 episode of Married at First Sight Australia will be replaced by an HD re-run of the movie, Unstoppable

Sky has confirmed it will screen all seven seasons of The Mary Tyler Moore Show from 3.30pm today on a pop-up channel that will include repeats of Mary Tyler Moore: A Celebration

And while it won’t be in HD, this is worthy of mention: Maverick will ride again on NZ TV for the first time since it originally aired here in the 1960s. Inexplicably, the legendary 1957-62 Warner Bros western series has never been dusted off on DVD, either. The bad news is Sky’s Jones! channel will be airing it weekly (8.30 Tuesdays from March 7) rather than as a weekday strip, starting from episode one of season one …

Could the Archie Comics adaptation, Riverdale, which premieres today on Netflix, lead to spin-offs, like a new gig for Josie and the Pussycats? “You obviously hope it’s successful enough where you get to have this conversation,” showrunner Greg Berlanti told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview, “so I’d say if you asked us again after seven or eight episodes have aired, we’d have a better [sense] because we’ll be finished with the season” …

Guesting on Prime’s The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon are: Danny DeVito, Brit Marling, Ciro Ortiz and Jon Bellion (12.30am Saturday); Drew Barrymore, Tom Brokaw and Parquet Courts. (11.10 Monday); Ricky Gervais, Vanessa Hudgens and Noah Cyrus ft. Labrinth (10.50 Tuesday) …

Yay, hopefully TV3 will now finally screen proper TV shows than boring reality yuck 🙂

  2. President Trump compared his ratings to Arnie’s ratings when Celebrity Apprentice launched in the US, don’t let him get wind of this or he’ll be crowing in Twitter!
