HD Heads-Up: January 4 – 10

➢➢ TVNZ 1 will welcome in the new year with a slew of new and returning series, including BBC blockbusters Seven Worlds, One Planet and World on Fire. David Attenborough’s latest and the prestigious historical drama will screen back-to-back on Sunday nights from January 5. The former explores the evolution of our seven continents and how they shape animal behaviour; the latter follows the intertwined lives of civilians across the continent of Europe who are caught up in WWII …

➢➢ The Guardian hailed World on Fire as “a beautifully turned ensemble piece starring Lesley Manville and Sean Bean [that’s] far from standard wartime fare” while The Telegraph observed: “The scriptwriter Peter Bowker paints the story of the war in Europe onto the broadest imaginable canvas. The scale of the drama’s ambition is laudable, especially given the absence of Netflix megabucks” …

➢➢ Seven Worlds will look spectacular in HD, and even more staggering in 4K when it’s released early next year here on 4K-UHD. AVForums said the 4K transfer is “visual opulence at its absolute pinnacle … If you want sheer reference material, it simply doesn’t get any better than this” …

➢➢ Also new to Sunday nights will be Pure (TVNZ 1, 10.30), about a young woman with a obsessive compulsive disorder who’s plagued with sexual thoughts as she starts a new life in London. The Guardian acclaimed it as a “masterly comedy about sex and mental health [that] never resorts to cheap laughs. It is brave, bold and barely short of a miracle”while Radio Times reported viewers raved about the “spellbinding” series …

➢➢ TVNZ 1 also will refresh Thursday nights with a new season of Who Wants to be a Millionaire UK leading into the 8.45 premiere of Living With The Boss, in which Kiwis invite their boss to live under their roof in a bid to connect and improve conditions for their whole workforce in the process. In episode one, Just Water boss Tony leaves his Remuera home for a sleep-out in Otara …

➢➢ Other TVNZ 1 premieres will include The Chase Bloopers (7.30 Monday), natural history newcomer The Magical Land of Oz (7.30 Tuesdays from January 7), foodie travelogue Extraordinary Places to Eat (8.30 Thursdays from January 9) and The Family Law, an already-streamed comedy about a dysfunctional Chinese-Australian family (10.30 weeknights from January 9) …

➢➢ Returning for new seasons that week will be Spartan: NZ v Australia (TVNZ 2, 7.00 Saturdays), The Casketeers (TVNZ 1, 7.00 Sundays), Pilgrimage – The Road to Rome (Prime, 7.30 Sundays), Wanted (Three, 10.50 Mondays), The Blacklist (10.30 Tuesdays) and The Island With Bear Grylls (Duke, 8.30 Wednesdays), which will air on a double-bill with Mega Air, a series about the air freight industry …

➢➢ Ahead of the soap’s return on January 13, TVNZ 2 will screen Beginner’s Guide to Shortland Street (7.30 Thursday), in which Anika Moa interviews the cast and recaps their “best moments” from 2019 …
