HD Heads-Up: January 9 – 15

From hero to zero … TV3’s Heroes Reborn returns January 11 in a new time slot: 11.15 Mondays.

The sci-fi reboot has been demoted to late-night after the first 10 episodes tanked in primetime.

But at least TV3 is keeping the faith with fans by airing the last three episodes of season one within five days of the US (where Heroes Reborn has fared slightly better — its ratings have been in the mid-range of NBC’s stable).

The show’s resumption here signals the start of a return to programming normality, with TV3 also bringing back that week NCIS (TV3, 8.35 Tuesday) and SVU (TV3, 9.30 Tuesday) while TV2 resumes Neighbours (6.30 weeknights) and premieres season 26 of The Amazing Race, albeit off-peak in the slot where hitherto older seasons have aired (4.10 Saturday).

TV1 also has a raft of finals amid a peppering of HD specials: Shark (TV1, 7.30 Sunday), Hikoi: The Land March (TV1, 10.10 Sunday) and Australia’s Most Hunted (TV1, 9.30 Monday).

In Shark, Great White Sharks gather together by the tiny pacific island of Guadalupe and use body language to communicate with each other.

In Shark, Great Whites of the Pacific use body language to communicate.

Shark is part one of two about the species’ diversity, Hikoi commemorates the 40th anniversary of the famous land march, and Australia’s Most Hunted documents the seven-year manhunt for Malcolm John Naden (the programme’s almost as old — it aired across the Tasman in September 2013).

Re-runs of note in HD include season three of Sherlock (TV1, 10.10 Saturday), Erebus – Operation Overdue (TV1, 8.35 Sunday) and, as curtain raisers for their return, the most recent seasons of The Walking Dead (TV2, 12.55am Monday) and How to Get Away With Murder (TV2, 10.55 Monday/11.25 Tuesday)

Network movie premieres range from prime-time firsts Mr Pip (TV3, 8.45 Saturday) and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted (TV2, 7.00 Sunday) to late-night notables Winter’s Tale (TV2, 10.40 Saturday), The Fifth Estate (TV2, 12.55am Sunday) and Enough Said (TV3, 10.45 Sunday).

Other coming attractions in HD include:

  • It Takes Two (TV2, 7.00 Saturday)
  • Gulliver’s Travels (TV3, 7.00 Saturday)
  • One for the Money (TV2, 8.55 Saturday)
  • GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra (TV3, 8.35 Sunday)

Happy New Year Philip, hopefully 2016 will be a BIG year for HD 🙂

  2. Hey, Philip. Can you tell me when The X-Files reboot series will go to air on TV2 this new year?

  3. TVNZ hasn’t released that info yet but given the show’s being rolled out internationally in more than 60 markets, I imagine it will be the same week as the US’s January 24 premiere. I’m picking 9.30 Wednesday for the six-part revival, which would be like a homecoming as that’s where TV2 launched the original 20 odd years ago. Then again, perhaps the show’s older leads and demographics may make it more suitable for TV1.

  4. Hi Philip. Do you have any idea when the rights for The Simpsons and Family Guy kick in for TVNZ? I understand they have also picked up some older episodes. Do you think they will strip them weeknights (possibly rest Friends?)

  5. Looking forward to the new The X-Files. Happy new year Philip. Hope you have a great 2016 and keep up the good work.

  6. Hi Clint. TVNZ’s rights cover from the latest seasons of The Simpsons and Family Guy and some earlier eps of the former which, as you say, TV2 will probably use to rest Friends. I’ve just posted this update: https://www.screenscribe.net/channels/will-tvnz-hit-a-homer-run-with-fox-hits/

  7. Thanks, Paul. Your best wishes are much appreciated. Happy New Year to you, too.
