HD Heads-Up: July 13

TVNZ 2 has relegated the premiere of “paranormal stoner comedyDeadbeat to the dead zone: overnight Fridays from July 28. It stars Tyler Labine (Mad Love, Reaper) as a hapless New York City medium, was favourably reviewed, co-stars Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman’s daughter Lucy, and has survived three seasons on streaming service Hulu. “However familiar, this Hulu original series is also disarmingly funny, conjuring quirky moments as it channels the comedic side of Ghost,” said Variety …

All Round to Mrs Brown’s, which premieres tonight (TVNZ 1, 8.40), was critically castigated but a “huge hit” for BBC1. The UK premiere drew 6.9 million viewers and the series averaged 6.4 million. Predictably, it has been renewed for a second, six-part run …

Sunday’s Planet Earth II episode, Mountains (Prime, 7.30), caused an outcry in the UK because of footage of a female snow leopard being “raped”. But the Sydney Morning Herald reckons such criticism “jumped the shark” and reports the version shown on Channel Nine only “implied” the rape. “A BBC spokesperson told Fairfax Media that the footage had not been edited for international audiences and was the same as what screened in the UK” …

TVNZ 2 will refresh its Sunday line-up with the return of The Simpsons ahead of the premiere of Little Big Shots on July 23. The latter is a US talent quest for kids that The Hollywood Reporter called a “(mostly) family friendly show.” It was popular enough in the US to spawn a UK version fronted by Dawn French that The Guardian dubbed “cheap and cheerful” but which The i thought “cringeworthy, patronising and a bit pointless” …

Returning the same week are Offspring (TVNZ 1, 8.40 Wednesday), First Dates Australia (TVNZ 2, 8.30 Thursday) and 7 Days (Three, 9.00 Friday) while ending their runs are Britain’s Got Talent and Call the Midwife

Fans of The Blacklist will be disheartened to learn spin-off Redemption won’t screen here in HD. What was meant to be a Monday night crime drama on TVNZ 1 now will air 9.40 Wednesdays from July 26 on Duke in SD (unless you stream it live in 720p). TVNZ 1 obviously saw little value in accommodating a spin-off from a rival network that got the chop after only eight weeks in the US and consigning its own gimmicky procedural, Blindspot, to late-night …

The pick of the free-to-air movie premieres in the week starting July 22 will debut in SD on Duke: Southpaw (9.35 Monday). TVNZ 1 will premiere in HD The Rewrite (10.40 Saturday), and TVNZ 2 has the obscure horror, 7500 (11.15 Sunday), but the rest of the week’s HD attractions are re-runs:

  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (TVNZ 2, 5.25 Saturday)
  • Shrek (Three, 7.00 Saturday)
  • Transformers: Dark of the Moon (TVNZ 2, 7.00 Saturday)
  • Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (Three, 8.40 Saturday)
  • Invention of Lying (Three, 10.50 Saturday)
  • Knight and Day (Three, 8.30 Sunday)
  • Gone in Sixty Seconds (TVNZ 2, 9.00 Sunday)
  • Quantum of Solace (Three, 7.30 Thursday)
  • Gone (Prime, 9.35 Friday) …

Guesting on the July 28 broadcast of The Graham Norton Show (Three, 8.00) are Chris Hemsworth, Jessica Chastain and Stephen Mangan …

We do need Deadbeat up in the early primetime. Most of dramas are on so, so late, why not put the good shows in early primetime? TVNZ 2 is in competition with TV3 so let’s get things going, so let’s get very smart here — we need Australian and American entertainment shows. Let’s crush TV3’s momentum.
