HD Heads-Up: July 20-26

It’s showtime, with the networks launching a slew of HD series the same week The X Factor NZ ends its run.

The talent quest finale will screen on July 22, in a two-hour special that will screen from 7.30 instead of 8.00.

The earlier time is due to Shortland Street reverting to Monday half-hours that week and will see X Factor go head-to-head with TV2’s magic SD special, Cosentino: The Grand Illusionist.

It was the #1-rating show of the night when it aired on Australian TV nearly a year ago.

Sunday’s penultimate X Factor will face off against TV2’s SD premiere of The Karate Kid in a 90-minute special, ahead of TV One resuming Call the Midwife.

The belated recall of the HD nursing drama to Sunday nights will push back Mr Selfridge to 9.35.

The same week TV One will premiere in HD reality newcomer Showtime (8.00 Wednesday), which is billed as following the “melodramas, mishaps, tantrums and triumphs” of community theatre groups putting on a show.

TV3 will resume another local series, Super City (10.00 Friday), and TV2 will begin new seasons of The Mentalist (8.30 Tuesday), Body of Proof (9.35 Tuesday),  Nikita (10.30 Thursday) and Rizzoli & Isles (midnight Thursday).

TV2 also will premiere The Protector (11.35 Tuesday), in which Profiler’s Ally Sheedy plays a divorced detective juggling homicide cases and solo motherhood.

Reviews ranged from “a great summertime detective show” (Philadelphia Inquirer) to “it’s so limply handled as to make ABC’s similarly themed Body of Proof look scintillating by comparison” (Variety).

Among the movies airing free-to-air in HD for the week starting July 20 are: My Big Fat Greek Wedding (TV2, 9.05 Saturday), Beastly (TV2, midnight Saturday), When in Rome (TV2, 1pm Sunday), X-Men: First Class (TV3, 8.35 Sunday) and Wolf Creek (TV2, 10.20 Sunday).

TV3 certainly is doing the right thing having X-Men: First Class after X Factor NZ … will be a BIG ratings winner for sure 🙂
