HD Heads-Up: July 26

➢➢ Hitting all the wrong notes with American Idol isn’t stopping Three from launching in primetime another star-spangled talent quest, America’s Got Talent. Season 13 will screen 7.00 Saturdays from August 4. AGT will air in the same slot where TVNZ 1 was previously airing Britain’s Got Talent. The latest season went to air two months ago in the US and it looks as if Three will be screening it in double-episodes to help close the gap with the US in time for the finale. S12 was the most popular so far in the US. Tyra Banks fronted the series for the first time and she returns for S13, along with judges Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Mel B …

➢➢ Returning in the week starting August 4 are Bachelor in Paradise (TVNZ OnDemand, from Wednesday), iZombie (TVNZ 2, 11.25 Wednesday), Ugly House to Lovely House (TVNZ 1, 8.30 Thursday) and Silent Witness (Prime, 9.35 Thursday) while ending its run is Earth’s Great Seasons. Taking centerstage in Stand Up is Michael McIntyre’s Showtime (Duke, 9.30 Thursday)…

➢➢ Season 21 of Silent Witness comprises five two-part mysteries. The BBC series, about a team of forensic pathologists helping police solve murders using clues found on the bodies of victims, is currently the world’s longest running crime drama, prompting Radio Times to investigate if cancellation was overdue: “It’s time Silent Witness was silenced for good … It’s too silly to live. It’s exhausted what was once a rich seam of mortuary-slab stories that should stay there, in the mortuary, but which leak into the outside world as the pathologists use their special powers of investigation.” The good news for fans is the BBC’s ordered S22 …

➢➢ TVNZ 2 will double-bill two network movie premieres on August 6: Finding Dory (7.00) and The Finest Hours (8.30). The rest of that week’s HD coming attractions include:

  • Finding Nemo (TVNZ 2, 7.00 Saturday)
  • Gangster Squad (TVNZ 2, 9.00 Saturday)
  • Born and Missing (Three, 10.45 Saturday
  • American History X (TVNZ 2, 11.20 Saturday)
  • Knight and Day (Three, 8.30 Sunday)
  • The Godfather (Maori TV, 8.30 Sunday)
  • 7500 (TVNZ 2, 12.45am Monday)
  • The Number 23 (Prime, 9.30 Monday)
  • Dragon Wars (Duke, 8.30 Tuesday)
  • Speed 2: Cruise Control (Three, 8.30 Thursday)

I hope Three has a spare afternoons slot coming up because I can’t see this working either. American reality/competition shows have always struggled here in recent years, from The Voice to American Idol.

  2. Hi Philip, I’ve just noticed that Bravo has aquired The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and will air from Monday at 5:30pm. Although not in HD this is great news for fans who had been wanting it to return after Prime let it go. I also see that Bravo is airing SVU on Thursday nights which is kind of bizarre considering Bravo tends to be wall to wall reality. Any reasoning behind this rationale?

  3. Thanks for the heads-up, Leo. I only wish Bravo’s publicists were just as attentive. The latest billings I have from the channel make no mention of TTS. I don’t cover Bravo because it’s not HD but perhaps the channel is broadening its appeal in response to ThreeLife now offering wall-to-wall reality. Or maybe owner NBC is testing it as a platform for more general entertainment, using content from NBCUniversal Television Distribution. For a while now it’s been running Sunday and Friday night movies.
