HD Heads-Up: June 15-21

➢➢ TVNZ 1 uses the 10th anniversary premiere of The Brokenwood Mysteries (8.30 Sunday) to launch a week of newcomers. Promises the publicity for the offbeat Kiwi whodunit: “From a brutal murder with a Jurassic twist to a spooky crime scene amidst the Day of the Dead, a lovestruck dental patient and a vicious visit to a House of Horrors, this seasons’ homicides capture the quirky spirit of New Zealand’s deadliest town. Even someone claiming to be Jesus Christ makes an appearance” …

➢➢ TVNZ 1 also refreshes Wednesday nights with two debuts: My Dream Green Home (7.30) and Bill Bailey’s Wild West Australia (8.30). The former follows Kiwi couples building sustainable homes; the latter has the comedian trekking through Western Australia. “From ferociously singing sweary shanties with locals to rubbing his face against old stones, Bailey’s jaunt Down Under is extremely eccentric – and all the better for it,” The Guardian said. Cautioned The Telegraph: “The programme is better suited to fans of Bill Bailey than to those interested in Australia” …

➢➢ The 12th Victim (TVNZ 1, 11.05 Monday) is a four-part Showtime docuseries about the manhunt for Caril Ann Fugate and Charles Starkweather, whose killing spree was dramatised in the 1972 movie Badlands and the Bruce Springsteen song Nebraska. “The 12th Victim is a beautiful thing to watch, in its black-and-white interviews and dreamy aesthetic, but it will leave a viewer in a troubled state of reflection long after it is over,” The Wall Street Journal said …

➢➢ Also new are Sneakerholics (Duke, 7.05 Saturday), which reveals NZ’s “sickest sneaker enthusiasts”, and Time (Sky Open, 8.30 Wednesday), S1 of the outstanding Jimmy McGovern drama about the relationship between a teacher imprisoned for road rage (Sean Bean) and his prison guard (Stephen Graham). Said The Telegraph: “An hour of television — the first of three — as gripping as it is anxiety-inducing” …
