HD Heads-Up: June 30

TV2 will launch a Sunday night family movie season with the network movie premiere of Maleficent on July 10 at 7.00. Oddly, it’s being double-billed with a 13-year-old re-run, View From the Top, which will start at 8.50, with both movies overlapping TV3’s top-rating Westside. Other coming attractions in HD for the week starting July 9 include: Meet the Robinsons (TV2, 5.10 Saturday), Bee Movie (TV2, 7.00 Saturday), Evan Almighty (TV3, 7.00 Saturday), Our Idiot Brother (TV2, 8.50 Saturday), Bride Wars (TV3, 8.55 Saturday), Good Will Hunting (TV One, 10.30 Saturday), Mom’s Night Out (TV2, 10.30 Saturday), Hell Baby (TV2, 12.15am Monday), 21 Jump Street (TV3, 8.30 Monday) and Despicable Me (TV3, 7.30 Thursday) …

TV One will premiere Criminal Minds spin-off, Beyond Borders, on the back of the season premiere of Code: 1 on July 11. US critics savaged Borders, which follows an FBI international division that helps Americans abroad. Said The Hollywood Reporter: “Moving on from the prevalent misogyny of the original Criminal Minds, CBS’ new spinoff is a pure distillation of xenophobia. A shameless combination of international b-roll and Trump Era paranoia” …

Winter’s coming … to Shortland Street, with a season of hour-long Monday episodes from July 11. The same week it will premiere season two of Shorty’s real-life counterpart, Street Hospital in the 8.00 Thursday slot. Meanwhile, TV2’s controversial reboot of ’80s Kiwi icon Terry Teo will screen first on TVNZ OnDemand from July 12. Kahn West plays a young gang prospect who helps an Auckland cop (Josh Thomson) to solve crimes after his father is murdered …

The latest dud sitcom to premiere late night on TV2 is Significant Mother, which will air 12.10am Thursdays from July 14. It ran for only nine weeks last year in the US and was poorly reviewed. About an older woman dating her restaurateur son’s best friend, it was dismissed as “dull and dimwitted” by the New York Times while Variety carped about the “numbing sameness to the gags” …

Comings and goings: Seasons three of The 100 and Young and Hungry premiere on July 9 (TV2, 1.00/3.00) … The season finale of The Voice (US) screens on July 10 (TV2, 10.25am) … Top Gear and Thirteen end their runs on July 10 … Prime Rocks with Leonard Cohen – I’m Your Man on July 12 at 8.30 … Wednesday nights on TV One soon will sport a fresh look with Secret Life of Pets, Prey and Britcam: Emergency on Our Streets exiting on July 13 … Joining Simon Pegg among the guests on the July 15 repeat of The Graham Norton Show is Michael McIntyre, who soon will be seen in Michael McIntyre’s Big Show on TV3 …
