HD Heads-Up: June 8 – 14

➢➢ TVNZ 1 will launch its winter schedule with three series premieres and the return of three staples in the week starting June 8. Despite the ratings disappointment of The Bay, the network will continue its 8.30 Wednesday crime drama slot with Manhunt, the compelling true-life dramatisation starring Martin Clunes that already can be steamed on-demand. He plays DCI Colin Sutton, who doggedly pursued serial killer Levi Bellfield. Manhunt was ITV’s highest-rated new drama in six years  — it screened over three consecutive nights — and one of the most highly acclaimed (the New York Times thought it “tremendously satisfying”). A second series has been confirmed …

➢➢ Two other TVNZ OnDemand exclusives also will make their on-air debut: The Little Drummer Girl (9.10 Saturday) and Catch 22 (9.30 Sunday). The former is based on the John le Carré novel about a British actress who’s recruited to infiltrate a Palestinian terrorist’s cell while holiday in ’70s Greece. Florence Pugh, Alexander Skarsgård and Michael Shannon star in the six-part series from the team behind another le Carré adaptation, The Night Manager

➢➢ Catch 22 will make one of the quickest transitions from on-demand to on air — TVNZ OnDemand dropped the entire series online only two weeks ago. Said New York magazine: “Joseph Heller’s World War II masterpiece of epic absurdities is given the Hulu miniseries treatment by writers Luke Davies and David Michod and directors Grant Heslov, George Clooney, and Ellen Kuras. Collectively, these filmmakers make some bold choices in condensing the 450-page 1961 satirical novel, retaining familiar characters and classic moments while leaving a wealth of character arcs and contradictory shenanigans behind in Heller’s prose” …

➢➢ Returning for new seasons will be Cold Case (8.30 Sunday), Outback Truckers (7.30 Tuesday) and Kirstie and Phil’s Love It or List It  (7.30 Wednesday) …

➢➢ Unfortunately, Cold Case will air opposite the resurfacing of another local documentary series, Prime’s Beneath New Zealand, while TVNZ 2 will take on Three’s 7 Days with season two of First Dates Hotel from June 14 …

➢➢ Ending their runs that week will be Fighting Season, The Rookie, What Next?, Whiskey Cavalier and Lego Masters Australia

➢➢ Comedian Jack Whitehall will host the June 14 broadcast of The Graham Norton Show (Three, 8.00). Norton missed his first episode in 20 years to host the 64th Eurovision Song Contest. Guests will include Gwendoline Christie, Luke Evans, Peter Crouch, David Walliams and Sam Fender …

➢➢ There will be three network movie premieres in the week starting June 8: The Edge of Seventeen (Three, 8.45 Saturday), American Made (Three, 8.30 Sunday) and Goldstone (Maori TV, 8.30 Sunday). Other HD coming attractions will include:

  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens (TVNZ 2, 7.00 Saturday)
