HD Heads-Up: May 25
► TVNZ 2 will overhaul its Friday line-up with the return of The Voice Australia on June 9 at 7.30. It went to air a month ago on Nine Network, when it edged out My Kitchen Rules in the ratings “thanks to new judges”, the Daily Telegraph reports. “Insiders believe interest in new judges Boy George and Kelly Rowland will see a prolonged ratings dominance for the franchise, now in its sixth year” …
► While this week’s episode was out-rated by a revamped House Rules, it should dent the appeal of Three’s top-rating The Graham Norton Show while its 9.00 stablemate, Car Crash Global, an ITV clip show the Daily Mail predicts “will leave you shocked“, will try to wreck 7 Days’ enduring popularity. Both will square off against the 9.30 premiere of Prime’s Kinky Business, a series that explores “the bizarre and lucrative business of online fetish videos” …
► Guesting on The Graham Norton Show the night of The Voice Australia’s premiere will be Salma Hayek, David Walliams and Liam Payne …
► Also returning for new runs in the week starting June 3 are Secrets and Lies (TVNZ 1, 11.05 Tuesday), 2 Broke Girls (TVNZ 2, 8.30 Wednesday), iZombie (TVNZ 2, 12.25am Thursday) and Call the Midwife (TVNZ 1, 8.35 Friday) while ending their runs are The Naked Choir, Murder Calls, The Blacklist and MacGyver …
► Prime will dust off the 2009 music documentary It Might Get Loud for its Prime Rocks slot on June 6. It explores the mystique of the electric guitar from the perspectives of Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, U2’s The Edge and The White Stripes’ Jack White …
► “Normally you’d only find this sort of thing lurking late at night,” The Guardian said of Loud but the New York Times countered: “For rock geeks of any age or taste, the lore in this documentary will be catnip. But It Might Get Loud is more than a narrowly focused fan artifact. It gives those of us with tin ears and clumsy fingers a chance to linger in the presence of serious artists with formidable chops and big, if not always clearly expressed, ideas about what they do” …
► On June 4, TVNZ 1’s Sunday will screen Born This Way: Awa’s Story, an hour-long special about an 18-year-old’s experiences growing up transgender …
► From June 5, TVNZ OnDemand will stream Clique, “the BBC’s madly seductive stud-ent thriller from Skins writer Jess Brittain that will hook you in – whatever age-box you tick,” predicted The Guardian while The New Statesman argued it “hides a brutal takedown of fake feminism inside a sly thriller” …
► Coming attractions in HD for that week include: Gnomeo & Juliet (TVNZ 2, 5.20 Saturday), Mean Girls (TVNZ 2, 7.00 Saturday), White Chicks (TVNZ 2, 8.50 Saturday), Britney Ever After (Three, 8.55 Saturday), The Assault (Three, 10.50 Saturday), Without a Paddle: Nature’s Calling (TVNZ 2, 10.55 Saturday), Striptease (TVNZ 2, 12.30am Sunday), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Three, 7.00 Sunday), Iron Man 3 (TVNZ 2, 8.30 Sunday), The Conjuring (TVNZ 2, 11.05 Sunday), The Young Victoria (TVNZ 1, 7.00 Monday), Maverick (Prime, 8.35 Monday), Pain & Gain (Three, 8.30 Thursday) and Big Hero 6 (TVNZ 2, 4.05 Friday) …

The Voice Aussie is the only decent one on Friday and why is The Big Bang Theory re-running weeknights? How long are we to wait for Emerald City or My So Called Wife, which may do very well with The Voice.
Emerald City will probably fill a graveyard slot, the series got canned after one season.
Hey, Philip. Can you ask TV2 when Wentworth and Emerald City will be going to air, please? They are still on demand and when will Wentworth be finishing on TVNZ OnDemand?
I expect Wentworth to resurface 8.30 Mondays once Bride & Prejudice ends, or soon after. The TVNZOD Wentworths are box sets of seasons 3 and 4, for viewers to catch up with or revisit before season five starts (it ends this month in Australia). Emerald City, because it lasted only 10 eps, probably will wind up in a weekend afternoon slot.
But hey we want to know when Wentworth season 8 will be starting on TVNZ 2 for people to enjoy this 2020 new season.
Hey, Patrick, no word yet on when S8 will air. Filming only started in October so don’t expect it on screen until mid-2020 at the earliest.
