As the curtain raiser to the return of Westside, Three will premiere a newcomer from Filthy Rich writers Rachel Lang and Gavin Strawhan, Hyde and Seek. It will air 8.35 Mondays from May 15 and follow a detective’s progress in apprehending the killers of his best friend. “This long-form cop drama represents a bold, if long overdue, move for free-to-air television in this country,” declared the Sydney Morning Herald. “Get past the dreadfully corny name of the show and there’s much to like here …

“There are legitimate concerns in these parts about the way the commercial broadcasters are using cheap content from New Zealand to satisfy some of their Australian content requirements (trade agreements mean NZ content counts as Australian),” the SMH continued, “but when the pitch from across the ditch produces goods this rich, there’s little reason to complain, eh bro?” …

Three’s newest Aussie reality hour, The Last Resort, will air 7.30 Tuesdays and Wednesdays from May 16. Ad News liked its prospects on Channel Nine: “In this ‘social experiment’, a buzzword for relationship reality trash TV, five fit couples struck by problems of infidelity, trust and intimacy go to a tropical island in a last ditch effort to save their relationships … as you do. Similar US and British formats featuring hot guys, girls, sex and sand are a proven ratings winner among women” …

TVNZ 2 also has an Aussie reality show pending: 9.30pm Meet The Parents, which will air 9.30 Thursdays from April 18. The premise? Singles put their romantic futures in the hands of the people who know them best: their parents (or other relatives). The Guardian dubbed it “a masterclass in inappropriate flirting” that marries Blind Date with First Dates …

TVNZ 1 appears to be clearing its 7.30-8.30 hour Tuesday-Friday for the return of MasterChef Australia. It began this week on Channel 10 and presumably will launch here on May 23. Ending their runs the previous week to make way for the food porn franchise will be Border Security InternationalThe ForceDog SquadReady For Take Off and Location Location Location

Also ending their runs in the week starting May 13 are APBI Am InnocentThe Missing and First Dates UK while expect the season finale of The Big Bang Theory to be succeeded by re-runs of an earlier season …

Returning the same week will be The Middle (TVNZ 2, 7.30 Tuesday), from episode nine of season eight (Friday re-runs of season seven will end on May 19), and Hotel Hell (TVNZ 2, 9.25 Tuesday) — the latter replaces Empire, which will air around 11.20 Tuesdays …

The only network movie premieres for the week starting May 13 are obscurities: The Night Stalker (Three, 9.50 Saturday), This Is Where I Leave You (TVNZ 2, 10.30 Saturday) and The Taking of Deborah Logan (TVNZ 2, 11.00 Sunday).
