Black-ish Emmy-ish? … Sex&Drugs rolled … Prime scores netball tests …


Next Monday’s Emmy Awards ceremony, which will air live in SD on Sky’s Vibe channel, traditionally kick-starts the fall season on US TV. Variety’s critics reckons Black-ish has the edge but point out Veep’s prospects couldn’t be timelier to win best comedy. They’re torn between The Americans and Better Call Saul for best drama series but agree The People v. OJ Simpsons: American Crime Story will win for best miniseries and Confirmation for best TV movie …

As for the coming season’s top picks, Advertising Age tips the Kevin James comedy Kevin Can Wait, Kiefer Sutherland’s return in Designated Survivor, and No Tomorrow, an hour-long romantic dramedy about a guy who thinks the apocalypse is coming. Expect Designated Survivor to screen on TVNZ, and Kevin Can Wait and No Tomorrow on Prime …

The advertising trade paper also predicts 2016/17 will be a critical season for several returning series, including The Blacklist: “With NBC planning to air a spin-off of the series, The Blacklist: Redemption, in the spring, media buyers hope the franchise will receive a boost.” Similarly, can Criminal Minds survive dramatic cast changes and will Supergirl fly on a new network? …

Expect the stars of many of the fall season’s new and returning shows to promote their series on the talk show circuit. For instance, appearing this week on Prime’s Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon are: James Spader, Mandy Moore and Jack White (10.30 Monday); Renée Zellweger, Shaquille O’Neal and Eric Church (10.45 Tuesday); Shailene Woodley, Carol Burnett and Jason Aldean (2pm Thursday); and Kevin James, Michael B. Jordan and Bon Iver (10.50pm Thursday) …

Wednesday night’s Tonight Show is being pre-empted by Prime’s delayed coverage of the second test of the New World Netball Series, in which the Silver Ferns take on Jamaica. The first test will air Sunday at 10.30, instead of Psych and Al’s Fishin’ With Mates, while the third test will replace Top Gear USA on September 17 at 11.05  …

Monday’s 60 Minutes (Prime, 8.30) asks if re-elected Australian politician Pauline Hanson will cause as much outrage as she did two decades ago, examines a campaign to legalise aid-in-dying in the US and meets the world’s smartest dog …

FX has axed Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll after two seasons. Season two of the Denis Leary comedy is airing on SoHo. FX has yet to officially announce the cancellation but Variety and Deadline Hollywood cite sources saying the season two finale was the series finale. Also canned is ABC’s Mistresses, after four seasons — but there’s good news for fans of TV2’s The Last Ship: TNT has extended its run from three seasons to five …  …

In the works: The Outlander’s Tobias Menzies is set as a lead in The Terror, AMC’s 10-hour anthology drama series that’s likely to premiere next year on SoHo …  CBS is developing a comedy with The Michael J.
