HD Heads-Up: September 13-19

TV3 gets back into top gear with top drama when Sons of Anarchy and Hannibal return the same week as season five of The Good Wife premieres.

But it’s the timing of the bikie drama’s seventh and final season that will get fans revved up: TV3 will air SOA only a week after the US.

Traditionally, the network’s saved SOA for the start of its new season in February but because of heightened interest in the final season, which recruits Glee’s Lea Michelle as a truck stop waitress, is bringing it forward to September 16.

Says Forbes magazine: “After seven years, the boys of SAMCRO will embark on one last ride and, based on the first three episodes, it’s going to be glorious.”

The movie-length premiere, which picks up 10 days after the season-six finale, in which Tara was murdered, will screen at 9pm but thereafter the show will be a 9.30 Tuesday fixture.

The same night TV3 will reward fans of The Good Wife for their patience by starting season five off the back of season four.

True, we’re still a season behind the US, where the legal drama’s about to enter its sixth year after a shocking plot twist, but kudos to TV3 for belatedly catching up by running seasons three to five consecutively.

Similarly, even though Hannibal tanked when it aired 9.30 Saturdays earlier this year, the network’s bringing it back for a second season, albeit in a later slot (11pm Sundays).

Its return coincides with season two’s Blu-ray release in the US, complete with cast and crew audio commentaries, a feature-length documentary on the making of episode five, shorts on the style of Hannibal Lecter and the prosthetics and effects in the show, cast and crew reflections on season two, webisodes, deleted scenes and a gag reel.

Its unclear if the US release will be Region A-locked but a Region B version will go on sale in Australia on September 24.

Also back for new episodes are Annabel Langbein The Free Range Cook: Through the Seasons (TV One, 7.00 Saturday), Anger Management (TV2, 10.30 Wednesday), George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces (TV One, 7.30 Thursday), Renters (TV2, 8.00 Thursday) and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which is switching channels, from TV One to TV2, where it will air 2.30 weekdays.

And on the eve of the general election, TV2 will screen the network HD premiere of The Campaign as its Sunday Premiere Movie.

Other coming attractions in HD include Observe and Report (TV2, 8.50 Saturday), Tamara Drewe (TV One, 10.,30 Saturday), Piranha DD (TV2, 10.25 Sunday), Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (TV2, 8.30 Thursday) and No Reservations (TV2, 9.00 Friday).

  1. Things are really cooking if Hannibal is back on our screens. I hear there’s a special prop seen in this season: an egg timer to aid in the cooking of human skulls!

  2. Mighty Ape have Hannibal season 2 BD/DVD slated for Oct. 15
