HD Heads-Up: September 27

➢➢ Knock knock? Who’s there? The first female Doctor Who and a slew of returning hits to TVNZ 2 in the week starting October 6. Doctor Who (7.30 Fridays) will cap a week of premieres that opens with My Kitchen Rules NZ (7.30 Sunday) and continues with The Walking Dead (9.15 Monday), Young Sheldon (7.30 Wednesday) and The Big Bang Theory (8.00 Wednesday). And on October 16, TVNZ 2 will launch The Great Kiwi Bake Off (7.30 Tuesdays), with sister show An Extra Slice to stream exclusively on TVNZ OnDemand …

➢➢ Doctor Who will open with a movie-length episode and The Big Bang Theory with a double-episode. The former will be aptly double-billed with the network movie premiere of Star Trek: Beyond (8.55) and the latter, strangely, with the return of Kevin Can Wait, a ho-hum comedy that didn’t rate well at 7.30 and which has been canned in the US …

➢➢ Even more surprising is TVNZ 2 teaming its “all new” Wednesday comedy block with the return of Talkin’ ’bout Your Generation, which flopped last month in the same slot. The last broadcast, on September 12, averaged only 1.8% of TVNZ 2’s target audience, 18-49 year-olds, compared to 2.2% for Three’s Hawaii Five-O

➢➢ The same week the newest Doctor Who, Jodie Whitaker, will guest on the season 24 premiere of The Graham Norton Show (Three, 8.00 Friday), along with Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga, Ryan Gosling and Rod Stewart …

➢➢ Your first chance to see season 11 of Doctor Who will be on October 8, when it will stream on TVNZ OnDemand. Also new to the online platform that week will be All American and Informer (from October 11). The former is a true life-inspired American football drama that will screen same day as the US and the latter a BBC drama that “lifts lid on the dark world of Britain’s undercover war on terror” (The Guardian) …

➢➢ Prime will give Saturday nights a facelift from October 6, with new double-episodes of QI (8.30/9.10) ahead of season two of The Coroner (9.45). Also new that week will be the Jonathan Creek special, Daemons’ Roost (8.35 Tuesday), and the Prime Rocks doco, Promises and Lies – The Story of UB40 (8.30 Wednesday) …

➢➢ Also returning that week will be Taskmaster (Duke, 8.30 Thursday) while ending their runs will be People on Bikes, The Hotel Inspector ReturnsUncharted With Sam NeillWentworth, The Middle, World’s Wildest Weather Caught on TapeBad Teen to Ballroom Queen, Silent WitnessThe Last Ship and MasterChef Australia

➢➢ There will be three network movie premieres in the week starting October 6: the obscure Final Vision (TVNZ 2, 12.55am Sunday), Testament of Youth (Maori TV, 8.30 Sunday) and Star Trek: Beyond (TVNZ 2, 8.55 Friday). Other HD coming attractions will include:

  • Labyrinth (TVNZ 2, 7.00 Saturday)
  • Six Days, Seven Nights (TVNZ 2, 8.50 Saturday)
  • RoboCop 3 (Three, 8.55 Saturday),
  • Lakeview Terrace (Duke, 9.30 Saturday)
  • Runaway (TVNZ 2, 10.50 Saturday)
  • Enough Said (Three, midnight Saturday)
  • Jack Reacher (TVNZ 2, 8.30 Sunday)
  • The Other Woman (Three, 8.30 Sunday)
  • No Escape (TVNZ 2, 11.50 Sunday)
  • The Mummy (Prime, 8.30 Monday)
  • Black Hawk Down (Duke, 8.30 Tuesday)
  • Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (Three, 8.30 Thursday)
  • The Cable Guy (Duke, 8.30 Friday)

Is there a time for when Doctor Who will appear on TVNZ OnDemand? I’m so excited, it sounds amazing going by what people have said about episode one, so far.

  2. The season premiere will be simulcast globally. BBC 1 will be air it 6.45pm Sunday in the UK so around 7.45-8am Monday here I would imagine.

  3. Thanks Philip, I will keep an eye out on October 8th. It feels like years since the last series.

  4. TVNZ can’t confirm exactly when it will go OnDemand. “But it’ll go live as soon as possible, once it’s on the BBC iPlayer,” a spokeswoman says.

  5. Great, thanks Philip. I see the first episode is getting heaps of excellent reviews already.

  6. Hi Philip, this is slightly off topic but I’ve noticed in TVNZ’s latest ratecard they are screening a late youth news show called Re:Late. Is this permanent or a short term experiment for the state broadcaster? Would like to hear what you can find out.

  7. Re is a TVNZ OnDemand series that’s billed as “a socially-driven alternate news brand that creates video content covering important issues that affect young New Zealanders”. Re: Late appears to be a 10-minute broadcast segment that will screen weeknights post-1 News Tonight from October 8-12 to mark Mental Health Awareness Week and young Kiwis’ mental health issues.

  8. Leo: Re: is a TVNZ OnDemand product aged at millennials. It has bite-sized articles on youth topics (usually 5-8 minutes long) and gets between 3-5m views per month. I expect TVNZ will be trying to monetise these opinion pieces that may appeal to mainstream viewers, too. If MW can throw The Spinoff TV into a schedule then theres no reason why something more relevant (and better produced) like Re: cant be in a schedule.
