HD Highlights: July 20

SoHo Cinema: The Laramie Project (Sky 10, 8.30, 5.1) Ten years after it first aired on HBO, this docudramatisation of how 21-year-old Mathew Shepard was murdered in Wyoming because he was gay at last screens here in HD. It re-enacts what happened when director Moses Kaufman and his Tectonic Theatre Project Troupe went to Laramie to investigate the incident for their off-Broadway production. The Hollywood Reporter called it “heartfelt and deeply unsettling”. Steve Buscemi, Amy Madigan, Christina Ricci, Peter Fonda, Janeane Garofalo, and Camryn Manheim star. (2002) ✭✭✭✭


The Best of The Graham Norton Show (TV3, 8.30) With Madonna, Will Smith, Dame Judi Dench, Katy Perry, Cheryl Cole, Hugh Grant, Mark Wahlberg and Cameron Diaz. ✭✭✭✭

Supernatural (TV2, 10.45, 5.1) Killers of an undercover narcotics cop target Boston homicide headquarters, putting Jane, Maura and Frankie Jr in a fight for their lives. According to Wikia, “This episode makes a nice self-reference back to season one’s pilot episode, where Sam was trying to become a lawyer before his girlfriend’s death, and in this episode, he is brought in to be Dean’s lawyer for the trial.” ✭✭✭

An Idiot Abroad (TV3, 11.20, R) Before Karl Pilkington can get to see the Taj Mahal, he’s forced to visit the largest religious festival in the world, stay in an Ashram with a living saint, and get cow faeces smeared on his head at a cow sanctuary. Ricky Gervais said in a February 2010 blog that due to the food in India, Pilkington “shat himself thin“. ✭✭✭✭
