SoHo Highlight: Boss (Sky 10, 8.35, 5.1) Better With Popcorn says episode two of the Kelsey Grammer sensation deals dramatically and emotionally with the fallout from the shooting at the end of the season premiere and whether Mayor Tom Kane’s wife, Meredith, will survive. “Politics and power grabs are mostly forgotten, at least for the first half of the episode, as Kane grieves while his wife is in major surgery. In between the usual hallucinations and overreactions, we actually see a softer side of Tom Kane, as he actually seems genuinely upset at her situation, despite the fact that she spent the bulk of the first season trying to take him down.” Said ScreenRant: “Unlike other programmes that rely on characters checking in and out of the hospital and treat life-threatening wounds like they’re no more serious than a particularly bad paper cut, Boss actually succeeds in building some suspense around the chances for Meredith (Connie Nielsen) to recover. This allows for Grammer to stretch Kane’s otherwise pitiless demeanour into something more akin to the man he may have once been.” ✭✭✭✭

Hyundai Country Calendar (TV One, 7.00) A dairy farmer turns his back on chemicals for a more natural way of farming. ✭✭✭✭

❑ ITM Fishing Show (TV3, 7.00) The far north of New Zealand is home to some truly massive Trevally, and this week finds Matt and the team targeting these notoriously hard fighting fish on light tackle in shallow waters. ✭✭✭

❑ Smash (TV3, 8.30, 5.1, R) A writing duo comes up with the idea to base a Broadway show on Marilyn Monroe. US reviewers thought it terrific but The Dominion Post’s Jane Bowron argued it had a fatal flaw: “Marilyn couldn’t really sing, so choosing a musical to ‘do’ her is pushing it. Hopefully the behind the scenes bitchy ego clashes will be taken to another level in future episodes.” ✭✭✭✭

❑ The Killing  (TV3 9.30, 5.1, R) On her last day of work, homicide detective Sarah Linden is drawn into a new case about the disappearance of a teenage girl, Rosie Larsen. After Wednesday’s rocky ratings debut, TV3 will be banking on this repeat of the season premiere to improve this moody whdounit’s primetime prospects ahead of the latest Underbelly becoming its lead-in. ✭✭✭✩

Movie: Waitress (TV3, 10.30, 5.1, R) Motherhood and  every pie except apple are at the heart of this quirky comedy/drama about a pregnant, small-town waitress (Keri Russell) who tries to win $25,000 in a pie-making contest to flee her abusive husband (Suburgatory’s Jeremy Sisto). Mixing kitchen sink concerns with light and fluffy humour, Waitress resonates warmth and truth but isn’t risky or wry enough to cut it as an American pie fable. Castle’s Nathan Fillion, Andy Griffith and writer/director Adrienne Shelly co-star; Shelly was murdered six months after Waitress’ release.  (2007) ✭✭✭✩
