HD Ratings: Australian Survivor Rescues 9-1-1

Said Entertainment Weekly in its recap of tonight’s 9-1-1 episode about people stuck in weird predicaments: “As great as these increasingly insane rescues are, the whole point of this ‘stuck’ theme is to illuminate how many of our main characters are feeling emotionally trapped or stagnant in their own lives.”

After two weeks of low ratings, Rescue 9-1-1 (Three, 9.00 Mondays), bounced back last week against weaker competition on TVNZ 2: the season premiere of Australian Survivor.

The emergency services drama almost doubled its 25-54 average, to 5.0%, on the back of a surging Married at First Sight NZ (7.4% of the same demo, up 2.2 points from the previous week).

TVNZ 2’s time slot-rival Project Runway NZ also improved week-on week, from 4.8% of 25-54 to 5.1%.

But its lead-out, Australian Survivor, averaged only 3.2% compared to 4.1% for a Motorway Patrol re-run the previous week.

However, AS did improve over the course of its 90-minute debut, from an opening 3.0% to 3.4%, whereas 9-1-1, which started midway through the Aussie show, steadily declined from 6.9% to 4.3%.

TVNZ 1’s Border Patrol had a strong night, up week-on-week from 6.0% of 25-54 to 7.3%, which helped lead-out Take Two to improve from 2.5% to 3.9%.

TVNZ 2’s The Walking Dead slipped from 2.9% to 1.6%, due to it starting almost an hour later than the previous week’s season premiere, but still out-rated the competition.

However, in TVNZ 2’s target 18-49 demo, it lost to 1 News Tonight and seesawed with a repeat of APB.

Otherwise, the 18-49 trend over the night was the same as the 25-54, although the gap between 9-1-1 and AS was much wider (4.3% vs 2.0%).

Three topped the night in both core commercial demos but TVNZ 2 won in the 18-39 and household shopper races.
