HD Ratings: Bake Off Face Off

TVNZ 1’s season premiere of The Great Kiwi Bake Off rose to the top of the 25-54 ratings on Thursday but TVNZ 2’s MasterChef Australia was still the 18-49 favourite.

Bake Off averaged 3.8% of 25-54 year-olds, the demographic TVNZ 1 targets, and 2.5% of 18-49s; MasterChef averaged 3.2%/2.8%.

The 5+ gap was much wider: 4.8% for Bake Off and 3.1% for MasterChef.

Bake Off’s popularity helped the premiere of lead-out Hard Quiz to win its slot in the 25-54 demo and it only just lost to TVNZ 2’s Motorway Patrol in the 18-49 contest.

Patrol lead-in Ten 7 Aotearoa also won with 18-49s.

Three’s Kiwi comedy line-up flopped, with Comedians Giving Lectures (NZ) averaging 1.2% of 25-54s and 0.8% of 18-49s, and Mean Mums 0.7%/0.5%..

These averages were were well down on the previous week’s season premieres of 1.9%/1.1% for Lectures and 1.7%/1.2% for Mums.

Eden’s premiere of Bite Club averaged just 0.0% of each key demo at 8.30 whereas the final of Underbelly: Vanishing Act in the same slot the previous week notched up a 25-54 average of 0.6%.

At 9.30, another Bravo series, A&E After Dark, again pipped the network competition in both demos.

TVNZ 1 easily won the night’s biggest key demos shares wile TVNZ 2 finished well ahead of Three.

Note: These overnight ratings exclude viewership of the networks’ +1 SD channels.

Why did Eden ratings not take off in the first place? Discovery wants the channel focused on lifestyle and quality dramas to lure viewers off the three big channels.
