HD Ratings: Big Bounce for Eden Newshub

Thursday was one of Eden’s highest-rating nights in weeks, with Newshub Live at 8pm the star attraction.

The nightly news bulletin that typically averages 0.1%-0.3% of 25-54 year-olds hit 0.8%.

That was on the back of 0.4% for Lobster Men and ahead of 0.6% for the latest Underbelly instalment, Vanishing Act — and followed Newshub averaging 0.5% on Tuesday.

Thursday’s uptick in viewership was partly due to scheduling weaknesses across The Big Three networks, particularly Eden’s sister channel Three.

Its new-look LOL line-up struggled, with the premiere of Comedians Giving Lectures (NZ) averaging just 1.9% of 25-54s and the season-three premiere of Mean Mums 1.7%.

However, these figures were up sharply on the previous week’s The Love Hour (1.0%) and New Zealand Today (0.8%).

The 18-49 averages were 1.1% for Comedians and 1.2% for Mums.

TVNZ 2’s MasterChef Australia won the 7.30 hour with 2.9% of 25-54s and 2.3% of 18-49s while TVNZ 1’s Dream Kitchens & Bathrooms averaged 2.7%/2.1%.

At 8.30, TVNZ 1’s Rich House Poor House narrowly had the edge, with 2.2%/1.5% vs 2.1%/1.7% for TVNZ 2’s Ten 7 Aotearoa and 1.7%/1.2% for Highway Patrol.

In another sign of the smaller channels chipping away at the networks’ dominance, Bravo led the 9.30 and 10.30 hours in both core commercial demographics with A&E After Dark and a repeat of Killer Siblings.

Even so, TVNZ 1 easily won the night’s biggest key demo shares, having swept the 5.00-7.30 zone, while TVNZ 2 finished second in the 18-49 race as did Three in the 25-54 stakes.

Note: These overnight ratings exclude viewership of the networks’ +1 SD channels.

Such a good result for the 8pm team. It appears it is building a following and hopefully gives Discovery more confidence in keeping it on air beyond 2022.
