HD Ratings: Bonzer Bondi
From the beaches of Bondi to Hawaii, Three’s law-and-order line-up largely ruled on Wednesday.
Double-billing new episodes of Bondi Rescue with re-runs has created a 7.30 beachhead for the network.
Newshub Live at 6pm and The Project lack the firepower of their TVNZ 1 rivals but thereafter Three dominates in all the core commercial demographics except 18-39.
Bondi Rescue averaged 7.2% of Three’s 25-54 audience, with the repeat out-rating its lead-in.
In the other key demos, the series averaged 4.2% – 7.6% over the hour; the 5+ average was 5.9%.
The 7.30 Wednesday hour was keenly contested, with TVNZ 1’s Race Across the World and TVNZ 2’s 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown vying for second place — but Bondi Beach was comfortably ahead of both in all the major demos.
9-1-1 won the 8.30 hour in the 25-54, 18-49 and household shoppers-with-kids demos but 18-39 year-olds opted for TVNZ 2’s Have You Been Paying Attention? while the 5+ vote went to TVNZ 1’s The British Tribe Next Door.
At 9.30 Hawaii Five-O enjoyed a clear lead in the 25-54 and 18-49 races, and edged out Coronation Street in the household shoppers stakes, but lost 18-39 support to Selling Houses Australia.
Despite these successes, Three won the night only with HHS/k; TVNZ 1 dominated the other key demos because of the overwhelming popularity of 1 News and Seven Sharp.
Here are Wednesday’s most-watched primetime programmes on the free-to-air HD channels (excluding +1 and in order of their 5+ rating and audience share):

It looks like the Discovery Channel will be buying Three. Does that mean documentaries only? Hope not 🙂
Interesting times, Trevor. The NZ Herald reports this, but The Spinoff writes this. Meanwhile, NBR notes: “Channels might survive if content costs reduced, but wherefore news and current affairs?” — which suggests Three could become a free-to-air smorgasbord of Discovery content.
That doesn’t sound very exciting Philip. A whole channel of reality TV sounds YUCKY. I will probably just watch sky sports, Neon, Netflix and Disney+. I think the future of TV in New Zealand is looking very different 🙂
I see MediaWorks have denied the NZ Herald story about Discovery buying Three. They are still in talks with different interested parties so that’s good to know and I see Three have got Big Brother Australia on the way, YUCK, sorry won’t be watching 🙂
I’m really looking forward to Big Brother Australia! Finally a reality show I can get addicted to again.
Be prepared, Dave, for something not quite the same. According to MediaWeek, the new version has “a format more closely resembling Survivor with the housemates voting each other out as opposed to previous incarnations which relied on a fan vote to decide eliminations and ultimately the winner”. Viewers seem to like it, with the 90-minute premiere out-rating MasterChef and The Voice.
