HD Ratings: Bravo Embarrasses Bigger Rivals
The embarassing state of network TV viewership was highlighted on Wednesday when SD channel Bravo out-rated TVNZ 1, TVNZ 2, Three and Prime at 9.30 in the 18-49 demographic with a re-run of Embarrassing Bodies.
It averaged 1.0% of this key commercial demo vs 0.9% for Coronation Street, 0.2% for Starstruck, 0.7% for Hawaii Five-O and 0.3% for Me and My Sugar Daddy.
Even in the 25-54 demo Bravo challenged its bigger rivals, with Bodies averaging 1.1% vs 1.4% for Coro and 1.6% for H50 while still beating both Starstruck and Sugar Daddy.
Earlier, TVNZ 1 easily dominated with 1 News at 6pm, Seven Sharp and Bradley Walsh & Son: Breaking Dad in both core demos.
But Three took the lead from 8.00 with Bondi Rescue and The Rookie comfortably winning their slots.
It was another bad night for TVNZ 2, with Popstars still struggling on 1.8% of both major demos and Patriot Brains falling to 1.5% of 25-54s and 0.9% of 18-49s.
Popstars rated even lower on Tuesday against TVNZ 1’s time-slot winning Eat Well For Less? NZ and Three’s competitive David Lomas Investigates.
The former averaged 5.4% of 25-54s and 4.3% of 18-49s and the latter, 5.0% / 3.8%.
But at 8.30 Three’s NCIS was well ahead of TVNZ 1’s The Dog House and TVNZ 2’s Have You Been Paying Attention? in both demos while TVNZ 2 ruled at 9.30 with Naked Attraction topping Coronation Street and NCIS: LA.
On both nights, TVNZ 1 won the biggest 25-54 and 18-49 shares and TVNZ 2 the smallest (roughly half that of Three’s shares).

Once again it doesn’t matter whether it is in HD or not – it’s not the quality of the picture, it’s the quality of the content. And if almost 97% of 18-49s are not watching the main channels plus Bravo that says something about the quality of content. Any idea what the aggregate linear TV (free + pay) totalled?
I can’t help thinking MediaWorks really lucked out getting out of FTA when they did …
We’ll never know if Discovery paid MediaWorks or MediaWorks paid Discovery – it’s such a rounding error on Discovery’s financials it’ll never be disclosed!
Actually, MediaWorks selling Three to Discovery may end up being the best thing that ever happens to Three especially with WarnerMedia joining Discovery. I see NewsHub may end up on CNN. I bet no one ever thought that would happen 🙂
