HD Ratings: Castle Falls From Grace

Castle’s Stana Katic and Nathan Fillion

The season-five premiere of Castle took a hit from TV3’s movie on Monday.

It averaged only 2.1% – 3.8% of the key demographics, losing both to Kitchen Nightmares Revisited on TV2 and TV3’s HD re-run of the movie, Hitman (5.6% – 8.6%).

Hitman’s second half was competitive with Nightmares but the first half was trounced by the end of TV2’s My Kitchen Rules and a season-four re-run of The Big Bang Theory (11.6% – 15.9%)

Castle’s odds were always going to be tough: it had been relocated to a new night (last year it aired Wednesdays) and had as its lead-in Criminal Minds, which in the past few weeks has been hammered by MKR and the overlap of The X Factor NZ.

This week the aging crime hit averaged only 4.3% – 6.6% whereas X Factor rated 8.9% – 12.4%.

The talent quest’s last half-hour averaged 9.5% of adults 25-54 while Criminal Minds could draw only 5.7% of its target demo over the same period.

Meanwhile, TV3 reports Monday’s Campbell Live was the highest-rating in the programme’s eight-year history, averaging a 5+ audience of 430,500 viewers

It was also the first time Campbell Live has averaged more than 400,000 viewers since its launch on March 13, 2005.

Last night’s episode rated well in TV3’s target demographic of 25-54 year-olds, averaging 158,700 — the largest since 2011.

Moreover, it out-rated Seven Sharp in all the key demos even though lead-in 3 News drew fewer viewers in each of these than One News at Six.
