HD Ratings: Dark Knight Not Such a Good Night for TV2

TV2’s network movie premiere of The Dark Knight Rises on Sunday won its slot in all the major demographics but the channel still lost the night to its HD rivals.

The three-hour movie’s overall ratings were dragged down by its length to average 4.7% – 5.3% but bedded in the 8.30-10.30 zone for the double-billing of Gotham and Agents of SHIELD from this weekend.

The Batman prequel went to air last night in the US where, “against some of the biggest time slot competition a series could face, Gotham averaged a very strong 3.2 rating with adults 18-49 and 8 million viewers,” The Hollywood Reporter observed.

Deadline Hollywood said the premiere “did everything you would like to see from a rookie — it delivered solid ratings with no lead-in support, improved significantly the time period and showed some growth at the half-hour mark.”

Gotham will launch here opposite TV3’s network premiere of Prometheus, from which the network will be expecting better numbers than Sunday’s tepid re-run of Couples Retreat (2.6% – 3.9%).

Its weakness helped TV One’s Call the Midwife to average 4.0% – 7.2% off the back of My Kitchen Rules NZ (6.8% – 9.1%) and ahead of A Place to Call Home (1.5% – 4.2%).

But the strength of TV One and TV3’s post-election news bulletins and respective lead-outs Sunday and The X Factor Australia helped these channels to conquer TV2 in all the key demos for the night.

Sunday’s peak-hour HD channel ratings and shares were:

  • A18-49: TV One, 6.5 rating/22.8 share; TV2, 5.5 rating/26.6 share; TV3, 6.0 rating/20.8 share
  • A18-39: TV One, 5.5 rating/19.5 share; TV2, 5.7 rating/20.1 share; TV3, 6.4 rating/22.8 share
  • A25-54: TV One, 7.8 rating/25.0 share; TV2, 5.6 rating/18.0 share; TV3, 5.9 rating/19.0 share
  • HHS/k: TV One, 8.5 rating/27.1 share; TV2, 7.0 rating/22.3 share; TV3, 6.7 rating/21.2 share.

On Saturday, TV One’s election coverage won the night, with TV3 taking out only the 18-39 demo.

Friday’s The Block NZ (8.0% – 13.2%) out-rated The Voice Kids Australia (6.3% – 7.8%) but wasn’t tops on Thursday (7.7% – 10.0%), when it lost to Police Ten 7 (10.6% – 11.5%) and TV2’s season premiere of Renters (7.8% – 9.3%).

TV One’s return of George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces was less than amazing (2.3% – 4.9%) while Upper Middle Bogan (3.1% – 4.3%) and TV3’s improving Motive (3.2% – 4.1%) lost to TV2’s network movie premiere of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (7.1% – 8.5%).

Wednesday’s Block (7.3% – 9.8%) beat MKRNZ (4.8% – 7.7%) in the key demos, which helped TV3 to largely dominate the rest of the night.

No wonder TDKR didn’t do as well as it could have for TV2. It finished at 11:50pm on a ‘school’ night. Far, far too late for anyone. It might not be in the spirit of the movie, but they should have aired half of it on Sunday and the other on Monday. TV3 did this with Pearl Harbour and Titanic a decade or so back.

  2. By now anyone with DVD/Blu-ray player or Sky have seen this movie. Are they going to ride TDKR [with commercials] till 11.50pm. Even bruce wayne would go off to bed. He gets up very early!
