HD Ratings: Diehards Still Top Guns

You might have thought viewers on Sunday night would have been torn between a new Brokenwood mystery and a 2019 Will Smith action movie.

Instead, they opted for a double-bill of a 1986 comedy and a Bruce Willis shoot-’em-up that was released nearly 30 years ago!

TVNZ 2’s Die Hard With a Vengeance averaged 1.6% of 25-54 year-olds and 1.1%of 18-49s, the key demographics that networks covet, on the back of 3.1%/2.4% for ‘Crocodile’ Dundee.

TVNZ 1’s The Brokenwood Mysteries, which had won its slot in the two previous week, overlapped the movies and averaged only 1.9%/1.4% — but still topped Three’s Gemini Man (1.7%/1.1%).

Earlier, Laura Daniel’s unveiling as Ruru Chick on Three’s The Masked Singer NZ (3.6%/3.0%) generated enough interest to beat the return of Young Sheldon on TVNZ 2 and the opening half-hour of ‘Croc’ — but not TVNZ 1’s Hyundai Country Calendar (6.6%/4.5%) and Sunday (4.3%/2.7%).

Prime’s Royal specials couldn’t reach 1.0%. Elizabeth II averaged 0.8%/0.7% and Charles: The Monarch and the Man 0.5%/0.4%.

Eden’s movie Devil’s Knot averaged 0.2% of the core demos, Duke’s Top Gear America 0.2%/0.1% and Whakaata Māori’s Sami Blood 0.0%.

TVNZ 1 dominated earlier, with The Chase and 1 News, which helped it to win the night with commanding key demo shares while Three finished ahead of TVNZ 2.

Note: These overnight ratings exclude viewership of the networks’ +1 SD channels.
