HD Ratings: Fresh Eggs Passes Use-By Date

TVNZ 2’s heroic effort to salvage viewership of Fresh Eggs failed on Sunday, when the double-episode finale finished fourth at 8.30 in key demographics.

The Kiwi black comedy had its primetime midweek run interrupted when the Christchurch mosque shootings forced TVNZ 2 to pull it from the schedule because of sensitivity over its violence.

Last week the network repeated the first four episodes late-night as the lead-in to Sunday’s broadcast of the fifth and sixth.

But in the 25-54 and 18-49 demos, the first hour was crushed by not only Three’s re-run of Hulk but also TVNZ 1’s Les Miserables and Prime’s NZ documentary series, Anthems.

Episode five of Fresh Eggs averaged 1.1% of TVNZ 2’s target audience, 18-49 years, olds, and episode six, 0.8%.

In the other core commercial demographics, ep 5 averaged 1.2% – 1.7% and ep 6, 0.8% – 1.5%.

This was in spite of a bumper lead-in from My Kitchen Rules, which averaged 4.4% – 10.4%, beating Three’s Dancing With the Stars in all the key demos except 18-39.

Les Miserables averaged 1.9% – 3.8% of the core demos and Anthems, 0.8% – 2.0%, while Hulk ruled with 2.1% – 4.6%, helping Three to win the night with the biggest shares of every key demo except household shoppers with kids.

On Saturday night, TVNZ 1 dominated with 1 News and Britain’s Got Talent.

Fresh Eggs had potential….but surprise surprise, with complete lack of respect for the schedule – it just got lost for the audience. I have recorded it (thanks series link), so will give it a go at some point … but I’m not totally convinced mainstream NZ has Freeview recorders to be able to record things this (does anyone know how many Freeview recorders have been sold and used as intended?). Iim convinced there are three main groups of viewers in NZ: 1) those with Sky i.e sport nuts, 2) those who love Netflix and 3) those who love the reality, cooking, home decor, dating, makeover, reality type shows … Less so are the quality dramas, the documentaries, the nature shows … while these ARE shown in NZ, they are definitely on a back burner to those multi-night per week reality shows that swamp the weekly schedule. They must appeal to a large demo in NZ to be shown this much (or they are just cheap fodder for the networks to buy?), but it’s a personal thing for me to stay as far away from this type of programming as possible.
I do like the convenience of Netflix, love a good drama, but also partial to a good series … H50, Blue Bloods, GOT, some of the Sunday night stuff on TVNZ 1, the Chicago franchise, but keen for new stuff, too – I already have Chernobyl ready to watch – again … moving more away from linear broadcasting, and watching what I want, when I want it. It’s all down to choice … pretty much thank you for getting fibre into NZ so quickly!
