HD Ratings: Gangbusters Night for Networks

TV2’s HD sitcoms went gangbusters again on Wednesday while TV3’s bikie drama Sons of Anarchy (above) was way out in front of the competition.

After a couple of soft weeks, Sons bounced back with 5.6% – 6.0% of the key demographics.

Its nearest rival, TV2’s Once Upon a Time, averaged 3.7% – 4.7%, while TV One’s Hostages limped on with 1.3% – 2.1%.

Sons’ resurgence was more remarkable given it had a much weaker lead-in than Time, with 3rd Degree averaging a tepid 2.2% – 3.6%.

Whatever its shortcomings, the current affairs hour is hindered by not only TV3’s 7.30 Wednesday woes but also the juggernaut that is The Big Bang Theory and 2 Broke Girls.

The former averaged 11.7% – 13.6% and the latter, 11.2% – 13.1%.

Shortland Street got the night off with a bang (13.9% – 20.4%) while lead-out Mom rated 10.6% – 15.4% ahead of Two and a Half Men’s 10.1% – 13.1%.

No wonder TVNZ’s sales department was crowing about TV2’s midweek comedies earlier this week: “TV2 is the home of comedy. The Big Bang Theory is delivering a mammoth average rating of 15.4, with 2 Broke Girls not far behind on a 14.1 average rating (AP18-49).

“Both of these shows (along with Wednesday night favourites Mom, Two and a Half Men) have already been green lit for 2015 seasons, and The Big Bang Theory has even managed to secure a further three seasons (taking the show to 2017), ensuring TV2 won’t be giving up their comedy crown any time soon.”

But TV One may be forced to relocate House Husbands, after this week’s episode rated lower than the previous week’s: only 1.5% – 4.3%.

Wednesday’s peak-hour HD channel ratings and shares were:

  • Adults 18-49: TV One, 4.3 rating/15.9 share; TV2, 9.4 rating/34.6 share; TV3, 4.9 rating/18.1 share
  • Adults 18-39: TV One, 3.5 rating/13.4 share; TV2, 9.5 rating/36.2 share; TV3, 5.0 rating/18.9 share

  • HHS: TV One, 7.7 rating/21.9 share; TV2, 12.8 rating/36.6 share; TV3, 5.5 rating/15.8 share.
