HD Ratings: Go Girls Loses Ground

Tuesday’s debut of the new-look Go Girls won its slot but rated sharply lower than 2012’s season-four premiere.

The long-running HD hit averaged 10.0% of TV2’s target audience, adults 18-39, compared to 16.2% for last year’s launch.

This was reflected in other demographics, too: 9.7% of adults 18-49 (vs 13.0% last year); 9.5% of adults 25-54 (vs 12.3%); and 9.9% of household shoppers (vs 14.6%).

This was despite season five, which has a new core cast, having a much stronger lead-in: My Kitchen Rules, which averaged 18.9% – 22.1% of the key demos.

Nonetheless, critics doubt the changes will hurt the series. “All in all, this was a great start to the new season, and a nice introduction to the new cast,” Stuff’s Chris Philpott reckons.

“Although the success of the fifth series will no doubt hinge on how well the newbies are received, the show’s winning formula is still firmly in place,” argues the NZ Herald’s Rebecca Barry, “all bright costumes, peppy music and more flashbacks, rewinds and fade-outs than you can shake a bottle of tequila at.”

In its new, later slot, Go Girls lead-out Revenge averaged 4.9% – 6.1% opposite HD rival NCIS: Los Angeles’ 3.1% – 6.8%.

An hour earlier, NCIS averaged 4.0% – 7.1% against Go Girls and Galapagos With David Attenborough (4.4% – 7.6%).

TV3’s HD sitcoms Modern Family and Go On were competitive with TV One’s RPA but MKR drew 3-5 times as many viewers.

MKR also was too strong for X Factor NZ on Monday: the former averaged 15.4% – 17.8% and the latter, 10.3% – 11.8%.

But X Factor has taken a big bite out of MKR’s Monday viewership: two weeks earlier, before X Factor’s debut, MKR averaged 16.3% – 21.5%.

The Blue Rose bowed out with only 2.2% – 4.5% of the key demos opposite The Following’s 3.8% – 4.7% and Kitchen Nightmares’ 5.9% – 8.8%.

At 8.30, Kevin’s Grand Design (6.0% – 8.6%) kept Criminal Minds honest (6.8% – 8.1%.) but both were a couple of ratings points behind TV2’s Big Bang Theory double-bill.
