HD Ratings: If It Ain’t Broken …

TVNZ 1’s faith in renewing The Brokenwood Mysteries for a ninth season was justified on Sunday when the season eight premiere of the Kiwi whodunit won its time slot in the core commercial demographics.

Overall, its ratings were comparable to the series it replaced, George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces: 3.1% of 25-54 year-olds and 2.9% of 18-49s.

But the viewership was slightly higher in the first hour than Spaces and up sharply in the second hour on Spaces lead-out This Is Going to Hurt, averaging 2.6% of 25-54s vs 1.5%.

It enjoyed a strong lead-in, with 1 News at 6pm averaging twice as many 25-54 viewers as Newshub Live, helping Hyundai Country Calendar to win at 7.00 and Sunday at 7.30.

Such is the enduring popularity of HCC that it averaged only one-tenth of a point less than 1 News.

The HCC/Sunday combo dwarfed TVNZ 2’s MasterChef Australia and Three’s The Masked Singer (NZ). They each drew 2.4% of 25-54s but MasterChef was more popular with 18-49s.

However, Three’s movie Venom destroyed TVNZ 2’s Rampage, averaging 2.0% of 25-54s and 1.8% of 18-49s vs 0.7%/0.7%.

Whakaata Māori’s free-to-air premiere of Bellbird averaged 0.3%/0.1%, Eden’s Nothing But the Truth 0.1%/0.0%, and Duke’s Great Escapes with Morgan Freeman and Top Gear America 0.1%/0.1%.

Prime’s Commonwealth Games coverage improved on its typical Sunday night line-up but didn’t dominate until post-10.30.

TVNZ 1 won the night with huge peak demo shares of 35.2% (25-54) and 33.2% (18-49) while Three was 3-5 points ahead of TVNZ 2.

Prime’s post-9.00 games line-up out-rated everything else on Saturday while TVNZ 2 movie Sing topped the charts from 7.00-9.00.

However, Three’s Building the Kiwi Dream Home was competitive at 7.00, narrowly beating the first half-hour of Sing and TVNZ 1’s Tipping Point: Lucky Stars.

TVNZ 1 still won the night in the key demos but TVNZ 2 and Three were neck-and-neck in the 25-54 race while Three was runner-up among 18-49s.

Note: These overnight ratings exclude viewership of the networks’ +1 SD channels.

That looks good, since past series of Brokenwood Mysteries have been more popular overseas than back home because not many people watch Prime and moving to TVNZ gives them a sizeable Kiwi popularity.
