HD Ratings: Lantern Outshines Rio
In the battle of the HD family movies on Sunday, TV2’s Green Lantern premiere out-rated TV3’s premiere of Rio.
The former averaged 6.8% – 10.6% of the key demographics and the latter, 6.1% – 9.1%.
The contest was tightest among adults 25-54: 6.8% for Lantern versus 6.7% for Rio.
But TV3’s X-Men repeat had the edge on TV2’s re-run of Zack and Miri Make a Porno.
X-Men averaged 5.3% – 5.6% and Zack, 3.9% – 5.6%.
But on the back of a repeat of Dynamo: Magician Impossible, TV One’s Call the Midwife dominated in the older demos and with household shoppers.
It averaged 4.4% – 10.5% and lead-out Mr Selfridge, 2.6% – 6.5%.
On Saturday, Sky Sports 1’s live international rugby broadcast and Prime’s delayed coverage crushed the free-to-air channels, with their HD offerings all down sharply.
However, TV2 would have been delighted with its HD premiere of Duck Dynasty, which averaged 5.4% – 11.4% of the key demos.
Ratings were unusually low for the networks on Friday, too, with The Middle averaging 8.4% – 12.8%, Happy Endings 4.1% – 4.6% and Super City 1.2% – 1.9%.
Meanwhile, Prime’s SD run of True Blood bowed out on appallingly low ratings: 0.5% – 0.8%. Its HD season starts next month on SoHo.

I thought Rio got higher ratings than The Green Lantern, at least more people watched Rio 🙂
Yes, you’re quite right — Rio’s 5+ viewership was higher: 6.1% versus 5.3% for Lantern. However, it’s specific demographics that matter more to the networks, and in the key demos — adults 18-39, 18-49, 25-54 and household shoppers — Lantern was tops (albeit only narrowly in the demo that matters most to TV3, 25-54).
