HD Ratings: Magnum Viewership Shrinks
Ratings continue to collapse for one of Three’s brightest 2019 drama hopes, Magnum P.I..
Wednesday’s episode sunk to season lows in all the core commercial demographics.
It averaged only 1.9% of Three’s target audience, 25-54 year-olds, off the back of 6.2% for lead-in Lego Masters Australia.
This shocking fall-off was reflected in the other key demos, too, with 1.6% of 18-49s (from 5.5% for Lego), 1.0% of 18-39s (from 3.4%) and 1.3% of household shoppers with kids (from 7.5%).
As a result, Magnum was narrowly out-rated by TVNZ 2’s Whiskey Cavalier in the 25-54 and 18-49 demos, and by a substantial margin among HHS/k.
But the crime reboot was more popular across the board than TVNZ 1’s Coronation Street.
It will be interesting to see how this week’s Magnum rates given: (1) it will be up against the return of Wentworth and, (2) Three has committed to a bonus episode next week because of an extra Lego episode on the Thursday.
TVNZ 2’s season premiere of Travel Guides Australia topped TVNZ 1’s Location Location Location in the key age demos while the season finale of Young Sheldon, in a one-off later slot of 8.30, rated below average, with 2.3% of 18-49s and 3.6% of 25-54s.
Unravelling the Mystery: A Big Bang Farewell rated solidly against the tail end of Lego, with 4.3% of 25-54s and 2.8% of 18-49s.
Tellingly, viewership in these demos leapt a point in the final quarter hour, which overlapped the start of Magnum.
TVNZ 1’s gripping whodunit, The Bay, could muster only 2.4% of 25-54s and 1.8% of 18-49s at 8.30.
Three won a marginally bigger share of 25-54s for the night and also led in the 18-49 and 18-39 demos while TVNZ 2 was well ahead among HHS/k.
On Thursday, the return of Mrs Brown’s Boys in two back-to-back specials helped TVNZ 1 to narrowly win the night with 25-54s while Shortland Street, Police Ten 7 and Booze Patrol Australia made TVNZ 2 tops in the other key demos.

Magnum hasn’t exactly set the world on fire for CBS in the US. So much so that it’s been shifted to Friday nights in the CBS schedule. It’s a weak fare akin to H50 so hard to see that 3 could have expected anything better than what H50 has been delivering. Surprised that it lost to WC though …
And I’m sure somewhere you’ve noted that WC has been cancelled but Magnum has been renewed …
That’d be because Magnum finished in the USA months ago and anyone that really wanted to see it has. I don’t understand why TV3 don’t fast track shows on-demand like TVNZ?
H50 was mostly a decent watch though, Magnum was rubbish from episode 1. TV3 would have been better off getting the rights to the original but mounting losses mean they are probably too broke to even afford that haha.
