HD Ratings: Narnia Nabs Lion’s Share of Viewers

TV3’s HD premiere of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader out-rated most of the competition on Monday.

It averaged 7.0% – 10.1% of the key demographics, compared to 4.9% – 7.5% for the return of Criminal Minds on TV One and 6.6% – 9.9% for Grey’s Anatomy on TV2.

Viewership built over the two-and-a-half hours, as Married to a Murderer (3.0% – 6.9%) and Private Practice (3.8% – 7.6%) drew fewer viewers than their lead-ins.

For instance, Dawn Treader opened with 7.1% of TV3’s target audience, 25-54 year-olds, opposite Rapid Response’s 11.0% on TV One, and ended with 9.1%.

But the biggest gains were in the other demos: 18-49, 6.3% > 9.4%; 18-39, 5.2% > 8.4%; and household shoppers, 6.8% > 11.0%.

However, the night’s biggest HD drawcard was TV2’s Shortland Street, which averaged 11.9% – 17.2% against the return of Campbell Live (2.4% – 4.7%).

Campbell Live should be in HD. They looked awful on Monday night. In fact, over the past few weeks all of TV3’s live programming from their Auckland studios has looked awful – did someone screw up the lighting?
