HD Ratings: New Shows Appeal to Networks’ Core Audiences

TV1’s new Monday drama Stalker won its time slot in the 25-54 demographic but isn’t among the freshman series CBS has renewed for a second season.

The US broadcaster announced this week that Madam Secretary, CSI: New Orleans and Scorpion would return but pundits are picking Stalker won’t be joining them on the network’s 2015/16 schedule.

Monday’s premiere averaged 3.6% – 7.1% of the major demographics, and was most popular with TV1’s target 25-54 audience.

That compares to a 4.7% – 6.1% average for TV2’s premiere of The Mysteries of Laura, which won the hour in the network’s 18-39 demo.

But it was TV3’s SD re-run of the sci-fi relic The Core that dominated in all the key demos, averaging 4.6% – 5.9% from 8.35-11.15.

That was because TV1’s Castle (2.0% – 3.6%) and TV2’s Hotel Hell (3.0% – 3.7%) rated well below their lead-ins.

Monday also saw Shortland Street come roaring back with an hour-long premiere that averaged 12.% – 18.1% for the first half and 13.7% – 19.5% for the second.

But Shortland Street lead-out Cougar Town collapsed, retaining only 5.0% – 6.5% to lose the half-hour against TV1’s Piha Rescue repeat and TV3’s The Block: Glasshouse.

On Sunday, TV1’s season premiere of Broadchurch averaged 3.2% – 7.4% and won the hour in the 25-54 demo.

TV2’s The Game Plan (4.2% – 6.2%) was more popular in the younger demos while Broadchurch’s opening overlapped with the last half-hour of TV3’s Dr Seuss’ The Lorax (4.1% – 7.6%), which hurt it among household shoppers with kids.
