HD Ratings: Newshub Doco Wins Wednesday

Newshub Investigates: The Enchanter Tragedy easily won its slot in the core commercial demographics on Wednesday to help deliver Three a clean sweep from 7.30-11.00.

It averaged 3.2% of 25-54 year-olds and 2.2% of 18-49s on the back of 3.4%/2.4% for The Block NZ: Redemption.

Three used the documentary to successfully launch The Men Who Sold the World Cup, which averaged 1.2%/0.7% and helped lead-out Newshub Late to win with 0.9%/0.6%.

Enchanter’s TVNZ rivals, George Clarke’s Flipping Fast and Taskmaster’s New Year Treat, each averaged 2.0% of 25-54s but the latter drew more 18-49s (1.7% vs 1.3%).

At 7.30, TVNZ 2’s Celebrity Treasure Island level-pegged with Block in the 18-49 demo while TVNZ 1’s The Celebrity Chase trailed on 1.7%; in the 25-54 stakes, Chase pipped CTI (2.7% vs 2.6%).

And at 9.30, TVNZ 2’s Live at the Apollo (0.8% of 25-54s, 0.7% of 18-49s) led TVNZ 1’s Coronation Street (0.6%/0.3%).

TVNZ 1’s evening supremacy with The Chase, 1 News and Seven Sharp ensured it still won the night’s biggest key demo shares: 29.5% of 25-54s and 28.7% of 18-49s vs Three’s 24.5%/23.2%; TVNZ 2 averaged 13.8%/16.0%.

Meanwhile, Three’s State Memorial Service: HM Queen Elizabeth won its daytime slots on Monday, with the first hour averaging 1.0%/0.7% and the second 1.5%/1.0%.

Three also had a strong night, with The Project averaging 3.9%/2.8% to beat TVNZ 2’s Shortland Street and TVNZ 1’s Border Security (it replaced Seven Sharp, which was off-air because of the public holiday).

CTI and Block where competitive but Three’s The Rookie won the 8.30 hour while lead-out Special Victims Unit was marginally more popular than TVNZ 2’s Australian Survivor in the 18-49 demo but not among 25-54s.

As a result, Three narrowly won the night’s biggest 18-49 share (21.9% vs TVNZ 1’s 21.7%) and was competitive in the 25-54 race (22.3% vs 24.7%).

Note: These overnight ratings exclude viewership of the networks’ +1 SD channels.

I guess when they promote The Enchanter Tragedy as heavily as they did and even made it the lead item on the evening news on Wednesday, it would draw eyeballs. Didn’t bother myself for what was basically a reality show.
